TAY A DAY: February 2001

Thursday, February 1, 2001

"People try to put us in the category of a lot of the boy bands but we never have been that and we never will fit into it because that is not the kind of music we do."

TAD/HAD SITE OF THE MONTH

We here at TAD/HAD are starting something new. We plan to feature a different website once a month. The websites that we choose will be ones that we find to be excellent sources of information or entertainment; sites that for one reason or another have become favorites of ours. We hope that you will pay these sites a visit if you haven't already been lucky enough to find them. You'll be glad you did.~ TLS & TC

February Site of the Month: The Hanson Hotel

The Hanson Hotel is THE site to go to for accurate and timely information on the latest in Hanson News. It is the very first place we check every morning when we get on the web. Established in 1997 by Lisa, the Hotel posts only information that has been verified to be true - absolutely NO gossip or rumors will be found here. Current webmaster Becka has done an *excellent* job of maintaining the integrity with which this site has always been run. Wondering where to find the latest articles about our favorite band? Dying to know when Hanson's next appearance will be? Looking for the most recent scans and captures from magazines and television appearances? To find these and many other fun and interesting features, visit http://www.hansonhotel.com !

"We have never been a boy band, never been something created, never been anything artificial. There is always the tendency to assume that you're gonna do whatever it takes to sell records and to do this or that. But we always, from the beginning, were true to who we wanted to be and to the music we wanted to make."

~Taylor, "Portrait of Hanson", Indianapolis, October 2000

Woohoo! Kris is on a roll....didn't she take some fab pics?

"It's sitting at the piano and guitar, and beginning to think about having a passion for life. You so easily forget how short it all is. Live each day as much as you can."

GL: What's your worst habit?

Taylor: I always used to tap on stuff. It drove people crazy.

Q: Could you build a shelter (on a deserted island)?

Taylor: We've done that many times. When we were kids, we used to go into the forest and chop down trees. You cut down one tree and put it in a "v" in the other tree and drape things over it.

~Girl's Life Magazine

Thank you, Shirley, for the Fort Lauderdale pic!

Taylor: There is always that occasional embarrassing moment when you get caught picking your nose.

GL: I will not tell people that you pick your nose. That's just too depressing.

Taylor: Everybody picks their nose at some point in their life.

~Girl's Life magazine

TLS and TC: Hmmmm....and yet, we are not in the LEAST disgusted by this! LOL

Many thanks to Christi for the AWESOME picture from Six Flags!

"I might be a wild rock n' roller but you wouldn't catch me peeing in public!" ~Taylor (circa 1997-'98)

Taylor: No no no no no, so that night I do, you're drinking, you know, you're up, I've been up there for two hours or so and I've gotta use the restroom. But there's an upper level where we are and all the bathrooms are downstairs and all the security guards are down there.

DJ: So this is like a little sitcom.

Taylor: So there we are, I'm trapped. So all there is is a window that goes out to the roof.

DJ: Oh no.

Taylor: So here I go, so I climb out to the roof and find a corner and that's-

DJ: You peed on a roof at Sundance? Right now there's teenage girls on their way to Park City.

Taylor: This is gonna be in Rolling Stone, too. So I go over there like, look, this is what I've gotta do, and I find a corner, and relaxation, oh that was great.

DJ: A corner of the roof? Right now there's kids going "seriously, I gotta find that roof that he peed on!"

~Taylor, discussing peeing on the "ruff" at the Sundance Film Festival, 107.5 The End radio interview

Never say never, Tay. ;o)

"The way you love me Is like a needle in my vein When you're not around me You know it just don't feel the same And I've waited a long time Just to feel the way I do Just give me the reason And I will be all over you Cause you're my flavor of love You're my flavor I'm dreaming of The way you touch me Somewhow it takes away the pain And now I'm a junkie I'm running around without a brain I got this jones deep inside me And you are what I wanna do You give me this feeling You always make me feel brand new Cause you're my flavor of love You're my flavor I'm dreaming of"

Taylor, on doing cover songs:

"That's the part of the show its just OURS, its sort of a little self-indulgent, sometimes. Ya know, we just have a good time but I think it does work for people who have heard the songs or people that remember the songs or may have heard them. Ya know, for the parents who come to the shows, or they could be older fans then they can connect with that so its cool."

"It was self-perpetuated. Before we knew it, we were writing. It just kind of happened. More and more, we began to realize how serious we were about it."

Q: What has been your most memorable performance?

Taylor: Melbourne is one of those things where you didn't expect much, and you show up and there are 30,000 people there. So that's like "Wow". And probably the Grammys because you don't know how many times you can perform there.

~Atlanta Girls Get to Hang With Hanson, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"If you have a good relationship with someone they're going to understand that you can't call every moment and you can't be there for every whim. The most important thing is to let the other person know that you care about them. Give them a call, and send them flowers on their birthday. If you can't be there for them, just let them know that you're thinking about them. That's the most important thing. It's not easy to make long distance relationships work, but that's part of it."

NO: What's the craziest thing anyone's ever thrown onstage?

T: Their bodies. There was one show when we didn't have enough of a barricade or enough security, and it was just insanity. And of course the underwear items, which we really don't have a use for personally. But they throw everything from teddy bears to peanut butter jars.

"You just really want something that really says something that really effects people in the long term, and it actually means something. And they'll look back on it and go 'Hanson did something that touched somebody or changed somebody or was actually influential' as opposed to just some random song that got played on the radio. It's not about that for us, it's much bigger than that."

Their looks - particularly Taylor's - haven't hurt their rise to the top, but the talented trio has paid dues in ways the manufactured groups never will.

NO: What about this teen pop phenomenon right now?

T: I've met a lot of those guys. I know how hard they work. But to say that I'm a fan of it, to say that we're not in a complete dry spell in the music industry right now, I'd be lying. I think we're in the middle of a lot of mediocrity right now. I'm waiting for somebody to come out with something really, really good. Some of the groups out there have something, they're working hard and doing their thing, but I'm not a fan of that stuff.

The show demonstrated that lead singer Taylor, 17, is truly emerging as the charismatic leader of the band on stage. He showed he has star quality, a great voice, - and he plays a mean keyboard. As the show progressed, Taylor ventured from behind his keyboards to take control at centre stage.

The ear-drilling shrieks that penetrated the Carpenter Center last night shot into the red zone of the squeal-o-meter every time the fey Tay tried to say "hello" or "thank you," as the predominantly female teen crowd swooned over his every muscle twitch.

NO: Do you ever just think to yourself "I wish I was just a regular guy?"

T: Well, that's kind of an odd question, because, like, who wants to be a "regular guy"? Nobody works up the ladder to become a "regular guy." Everybody works to be more than a regular guy. I would never stop what I'm doing to go "I wanna be an accountant." There are things we miss, everyday things, proms or whatever, but I love what I do. I wouldn't ever want to do anything else.

"Runaway Run is a really really sad song first of all. It's a song about somebody that is so in love with somebody, and they've gone through this whole thing in their head, and they're realizing that this other person is never going to return that feeling. And, they're saying I've gotta move on with my life, 'cause I'm gonna lose it, I'm gonna go crazy, 'cause they're never going to return it. And, I've just gotta get away from it, even though I'll maybe never feel the same way again."
