Then you have this get your microscope A campaign to change federal and state law to tax owners of SUVs for the damage they cause ... $1000. per registered SUV per year back to 1987. Let's see, Arnold Schwarzenegger, with his 9 Hummers, should be paying $9,000. a year for a decade at least, so that's nearly $100 grand toward California's deficit right there.* SUV drivers do this And cause this USA TODAY BEST/WORSE MILEAGE FOR US VEHICLES WHO DRIVES THEM and WHY? Maybe 5% of SUV drivers should actually be driving them, since they always have a bunch of people, things or work materials they need to haul around. But 95% of people who drive SUVs are pathetic cretins who bought into the Madison Avenue advertising and purchased these quintessential symbols of the Ugly American and drive them alone, as a commuter vehicle. TRENDINESS and ARROGANCE Every single SUV driver drove a smaller vehicle before they bought (or leased) their first SUV. Every SUV driver broadcasts to the world that they are either ignorant of their own role in using resources and creating pollution (as well as affecting other drivers), or that they simply don't care (which is where the obnoxious part comes into play). In the year after 9/11, one out of every four automobiles sold in 2002 was an SUV (!?!?). HOW THEY GOT POPULAR SUVs only got so popular because the US auto industry lobbied hard and got special exemptions from fuel efficiency laws and special tax breaks for these vehicles. The vulgarization of culture, which coincided with the emergence of Gen-X, led to ostentatious and vulgar displays of wealth and the need for props to project and image of toughness (Pit Bulls anyone?). So commodified 'cool' and expedient politics helped the SUV became the hot vehicle to drive. The usually pro-environment Clinton-Gore administration in the 90s didn't fight this because they were desperate to hold onto the swing states that employed the undereducated white male Democratic-leaning auto workers that build these things (Ohio and Michigan anyone?), and to appear to be for a pro-growth economy as Detroit was selling SUVs like hotcakes. HUMMERS: For big pricks with tiny dicks, and the most brainless of bimbos These vehicles are simply an abomination given America's role in the consumption of energy resources and the amount of pollution the US generates. WHY YOU ARE OBNOXIOUS IF YOU DRIVE AN SUV: The US consumes 25% of the world's energy yet has only 5% of its people. If there were not this problem of global warming causing climate change that statistic wouldn't matter. But the simple fact is we (the United States) are like your next door neighbor constantly throwing trash in your yard and letting the sewer back up onto your lawn and then blowing cigar smoke in your face when you come over to complain. That's how the rest of the world sees us. Island nations all over the world are making plans to evacuate part or all of their populations - either from low ground or complete relocation, as are countries with huge populations such as India and Bangledesh. India is engaging in public policy debates right now within its government over how to protect countless millions in three of its largest cities by 2020 - when it calculates sea levels will rise. The island nation of the Marshalls (remember, we bombed their glorious and beautiful atolls with nuclear weapons in the 1950s?) already are faced with spoiled freshwater supplies as encroaching seawater destroys these drinking water reservoirs. That nation will have to move its entire population and an entire culture will disappear because assholes in the US want to drive a Hummer or the Hip-Hop vehicle of choice the Cadillac Escalade. POLITICAL FALLOUT = TERRORISM: Think the Islamic extremism is bad now? (9/11 anyone?) ... Wait until countless millions are faced with homelessness, starvation, disease pandemics, war and economic dislocation due to rising water. They will be mightily pissed off, and they will blame the greediest energy consumer and the biggest polluter - us, the people of the United States ... the land of SUV drivers. ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMINALS: BUSH ADMINISTRATION - The criminally negligent George W. Bush administration has pursued troglodyte energy and environment policies in a blatant reward to the fossil fuel industries from which so many of them came ... all shamelessly seeking to have their chosen industry cash-in one last time before necessity forces us all to use cleaner energy to try to slow and ultimately reverse global warming induced climate change. *Actor turned Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger can close the $4 billion gap he created in the state's budget by repealing recalled governor Gray Davis's vehicle license fee increase by imposing an SUV tax on California drivers as outlined above. The state has over 20 million SUVs, and at $1000 a pop, that's $2 billion right there, for one year.
