1. Joseph Callaway's name appears in Virginia Patent Books On April 20, 1687 and again on April 21, 1690.BR>

The explanations for appearing on two different importation lists include returning to England or some other Colony or possibly some sort of fraud.

Joseph Callaway bought 77 acres in Essex County from John McDuffy (Essex Deed Book 10, p30)on July 11/12, 1711.

In 1765, Thomas Callaway and his wife Mary of Halifax County sold to WalterDunn, a tract of land in Essex County "whereupon Joseph Callaway formerly lived." (Essex County Deed Book 30, p58).

    Also from a State of Missouri, County of Monroe letter of administration on the estate of Joseph Bryan, Jr. filed by his son-in-law, Martin Grove, which names his heirs.

    "State of Missouri, County of Monroe--I, Martin Grove, who makes application for Letters of Administration on the estate of Joseph Bryan, dec'd, do on Oath state that there is as heirs of said deceased the following heirs and Legatees to wit; Samuel Bryan, Susan Bower, Polly Grove, Alsey Love, Manervy Brown, children of said deceased who reside in the county and state aforesaid and Susan Mills, Joseph Callaway, Etiline Mathews, Casandry Haley children of Sary Callaway dec'd. who was a daughter of said Joseph Bryan deceased the two first names reside in Monroe County and the two last names in Randolph County and State of Missouri. And that the said Joseph Bryan died without a will so far as I know or believe and that I will make a perfect inventory of and faithfully administer all of the estate of the deceased and pay the debts as far as the assets will extend and the law ??? and account for and pay all assets which shall come to his knowledge or possession".


    Sary (Sarah?) Callaway died before 1830 but all the others were in Monroe County in and around the town of Madison, as was Stephen W. Callaway. Alice lived in Sullivan Co., IL for a time prior to moving to Missouri in the 1840s.
