TAPAWINGO” (a Chippewa word meaning “place of peace”)

When shopping for a home in Vermont, often the primary issue is the trade-off between privacy in undisturbed nature and proximity to civilization and living necessities. Rarely does a location meet both criteria, and when one does, the property is usually quite expensive. If you have been looking for that special place that sets your life apart from the ordinary, “far from the madding crowd” and yet close to many of Vermont's highlight destinations, and, moreover, at a price that offers good value, we invite you to take a look at Tapawingo.

In our home we have enjoyed a peaceful life on 10+ acres high on a hilltop, right across from the crest of the Camel's Hump (almost exactly as pictured on the Vermont quarter ....look through your change!). We can't help but feeling part of something very special as we wake up every morning to the sight of “the most beautiful mountain in Vermont” meeting the sky right in front of our window.

One wouldn't expect to find all this closer than “in the middle of nowhere”, and still, we are able to drive to:

Downtown Waterbury in less than 15 mintues

Downtown Stowe in roughly 30 minutes

Downtown Burlington in roughly 40 minutes

Downtown Montpelier in roughly 30 minutes

Williston shopping in roughly 35 minutes (where one can find almost every retail chain imaginable)

Mad River Valley in roughly 35 minutes (Waitsfield and Warren, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen).

In addition, New York is a 1-hour flight away with JetBlue out of Burlington, Boston is a 3 hour 15 minute drive down I-89, and Montreal (our adopted metropolis) is just 2 hours away up the same I-89 and then into beautiful “Oh, Canada”.

And, lest we forget, we have a wonderful house: a newish, well built post & beam that is in excellent condition. Due to the unique design (original structure built in 1991 and attached addition in 1997), it can serve as a traditional 4-bedroom, 4-bath home with a living room, dining room, reading/sun room (vaulted ceiling), office, finished family room in walkout basement, large master bedroom (vaulted ceiling) with walk-in closet and whirlpool bath, 3 other bedrooms, full kitchen, additional kitchenette, attached two-car garage, and additional storage in basement. Or, it can be separated into two distinct parts by closing (and locking?) only two doors. Then, the guest wing / in-law apartment/home office/artist's studio is entirely self-contained, complete with own entrance, own kitchenette (two burner stove, full refrigerator, microwave), separate washer/dryer, bedroom, bathroom, and plenty of additional living area.

Although the schools are excellent, the taxes are very low relative to our neighbors in Stowe and Monpelier.

The obvious question is, “Who would want to leave such a place?” Our answer is: “Not us”. We are being forced out of our home due to unfortunate circumstances. Dan is a trader/financial software developer who needs an unusually large amount of internet bandwidth to satisfy the demands of his businesses. However, the high-powered “dedicated” circuit that was built by Verizon for our use has never worked properly since its installation in March. It seems that, despite Verizon's claim to the contrary, present technology cannot support a reliable connection of this magnitude in a remote location. Though things could change in the foreseeable future, Dan's business has stopped dead in its tracks and he is pulling his hair out. While we are able to operate in an emergency over our satellite connection (the dish, a $600-value including installation, will be left for the next resident!), this is not an acceptable medium term solution for Dan's businesses. As a result..........our loss is your gain.

Since we have no choice but to leave, we are motivated sellers and have priced our house accordingly. Anyone who has priced homebuilding recently knows that the price to build this exact house in this location would be SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE THE ASKING PRICE, despite the fact that this home has weathered very little depreciation .

Pictures don't do our home justice, since you have to be here to breathe the fragrant air and feel the breeze on your face to understand what makes living here so special. Still, this is the best we can offer you until we meet. Enjoy!
