STRAY CATS AWARDED "HERITAGE STATUS" December, 2001: Stray cats which hang around Rome's historical monuments have been awarded heritage protection by the city. Rome's council has declared 150 cats which prowl the archaelogical ruins of Torre Argentina part of the city's biocultural heritage, The council has committed itself to preserving them. In a statement, it said: " The cats have a well established and ancient bond with the city." II Nuevo reports they are currently fed and cared for by voluntary associations. From: NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPHERD In October, Richard Evans, a member of the Australian Parliament, proposed that the country eliminate all cats within 25 years. Evans offered evidence that cats have killed off nine species of wildlife and proposed that a fatal virus be released on feral cats.
