So, maybe you have done a little animal healing with your own or a friend's pet, however you want to get some real experience.  It is desireable to have some practice to enhance your skills and to help you become a better animal healer.

You might talk to a holistic veterinarian and see if it would be possible to go there once or twice a week to do Reiki on some of their patients.  That would also be a good way to meet the owners of potential future patients, and perhaps get referrals.

You might also consider that there are humane animal organizations, local city and county animal control agencies and wildlife rescue groups that could use the volunteer help.  If the facilities are not knowledgable about Reiki, it would be an excellent oportunity to educate them and challenge your skills at the same time.  There are no animals more in need of a little human attention and goodwill than these.

Reiki Healing could be sent to an entire room full of animals at the same time without having to handle each creature individually.  You could, in fact, find another Reiki Healer who is interested in working with animals and accomplish a lot of healing and calming relaxation for the animals in a short time.  While you are there, you could send peace and love to the poor creatures in the "execution room", who have committed no crime but are sentenced to death for the shortcomings of the human race.

All in all, animal healing can be very rewarding personally.  Animals have a lot of pure or "innocent"  energy to return to us.  Our Native Americans believe that spiritual contact with animal totems can give us insight into our own lives, providing guidance and inspiration in our approach to living.  Animals live perfectly in the world, and are here to TEACH us how to do the same. Animals are important to us as humans.  They would exist on this planet without us.  However, WE cannot live without THEM

In healing animals, especially pets, remember that wounded or sick animals are already stressed.  Their vulnerability manifests in different ways, and the healer should be aware of fear which turns into self-protective agression.  Whether you are helping people or animals, healing can only occur when stress has been removed from the situation.  Reiki is one of the most relaxation-inducing tools available to us, therefore, has the potential to
accelerate healing on all levels:
Mental * Emotional * Spiritual * Physical

When working with domestic animals, whether it is a kitten or a racehorse, keep in mind that these animals have daily asssociations with humans and other animals as well.  Be aware that there may be significant issues preventing healing.  Sometimes an animal needs help in overcoming or adjusting to emotional obstacles acquired through their personal life experiences.
