Pictures of the "shoe/boot"

Details:

  • The shoe was found pretty much in the position its layed up in the pictures. With one difference. The toe section was angled 90 degres in comparision to the heel section
  • Heel
Remains of 1,5 handmade spike/nail. Approx 4 cm long.
Heel stiffener approx 5-10 cm high. Hard to determine height. As the upper hedge has been damaged
  • Toe
Two large handmade spike/nails at front end. The two nails have been turned and its edges are facing each other on the back of the sole. These two nails are interesting as the are located in toe section.
Can only guess how the shoemaker was able to put them there aswell as the might cause some inconvinence for the person wearing them. Normaly I would guess that these would be located at the heel.
    Pointed/semi circular toe shape
  • Sole
Due to the bad state of the object its hard do determine how many layers of leather. I have counted to 4 or 5 layers. There is also an thin layer of what I woould describe as an "whool sole" between two of the leather soles. Its in very bad state.
  • Other
The sole is hold together by many small nails about 2-3 mm long.
There is an band of leather running through the shoe. From heel to toe. The band is made out of three separate cut leather pieces. I dont know the correct english term for it but it might be called "lest" or "least" or "last" in english.
The size of the shoe is rather big. Probably a 43-45 in size.
    Looks like an right shoe.
Appears to have had an wooden sole.

My theory
The shape and and size of the fragments resembles an, what I would call, "collarboot". However Im not familliar with shoemaking principes and when certain features was invented as the "last" for instance.
If this is an "collarboot". Were they by any chance worn by german or  danish mercinaries in 1612? (Or perhaps by peasants) Looks a bit expensive for peasants.

The pictures
A zip-file with all the pictures is located at the bottom. However you can click the links to the right aswell

Upper view of the shoe. Toe is pointing downward in the pic. The large chunk of leather to the left is an piece that was located in the heel section. Looks like it have been made after the shoe was made. Probably by its owner.

The smaller piece between the shoe and the bigger chunk of leather is a part of the "last" I believe?

Close up of one of the small nails thatīs holding the the sole together.  Dsc00007.jpg

Side view of the shoe. The piece of leather laying at the front of the shoe closest to the camera is a part of the "upper leather" I beleive. Dsc00008.jpg

Side view of the nail at the front of the shoe Dsc00009.jpg

Other view of the heel. Note that the "last" is visible at the lower part of the image Dsc00010.jpg

Another side view of the shoe. Note how the "upper leather" is fitting to one of the nails at the toe. The angle of the piece is a bit distorted as it feel when the picture was taken.
However there is an alignment of holes at one of  its edges. Were once seam was that attached it to the sole.

Close up of the nail in the heel. There was another one just like this one but it had broken of. It was only just visible, guess the camera didnt pic it up.  Dsc00013.jpg

Close up of the nails at the toe. Note the two curved large nails at the front and the many smaller nails holding the sole together. Dsc00014.jpg

Other picture showing the curved nails better. The edge to the right would be the shoes right side Dsc00015.jpg
