Welcome to the Project Michelangelo website. This site has been dedicated to two Italian superliners, SS Michelangelo and SS Raffaello, who served in the North-Atlantic route from 1965 to 1975. These ships were, in our opinion, probably two of the most beautiful ships ever constructed, and also two of
the saddest liners, for apart from the French liner Normandie that only served for four years, few liners have ever suffered such an undeserving fate.
They were not as fast as United States Line's speed-champion United States or suffer such a terrifying fate as the Titanic, but they were splendid and modern as no other Atlantic liner had been. So this site is here to give these ships some of the recognition they rightfully deserve.
Admired and envied by all the world, they were the most modern ships of their time and a fine couple of sister ships built after the second war. Their lounges were furnished with painthings and sculptures by famous contemporary artists and the design of the lounges was assigned to the most famous Italian architects.
During their activity service, they were at the centre of the Italian news, their interiors where often showed on TV, they were the symbol of Italy's greatness in the world of latest naval technology... but after their dishonorable failure, mainly attributable to their bad administration, these ships have been completely forgotten, ignored, as if they never were existed.
Another reason for the existence of this site is the fact that there are very few sites that tell anything about the Michelangelo or Raffaello, and in most cases the information provided is rather limited. We have felt that such magnificent ships deserve to have a large-scale website dedicated only to them.
Which brings us to the main principle of Project Michelangelo: we intend to find out anything and everything about these ships. Many people have been extremely helpful in this, but since it would not be sufficient to thank them here, they are all given the credit they deserve in the links and acnowledgments -section of the site. If you have any (and we mean any) information on the ships, even if it was about the colour of the carpets in tourist class children's playroom, please mail us.
Enough with boring introductions. When browsing the site you will find that the history of the ships is divided into three chapters: History and Designing The Superliners, which tell about both ships, and Service, which tells about Michelangelo and Raffaello separately.

Benvenuti nel "Progetto Michelangelo". Questo sito è dedicato ai due supertransatlantici italiani Michelangelo e Raffaello che servirono la rotta nord atlantica dal 1965 al 1975. Secondo la nostra opinione questi sono stati due dei transatlantici più belli mai costruiti, ed anche due fra le storie più tristi. A parte l'immenso supertransatlantico francese Normandie, che stette in servizio solo 4 anni, poche altre navi subirono un destino così inglorioso e immeritevole.
Non erano veloci come il transatlantico americano United States, l'ultimo vincitore del Nastro Azzurro (Blue Ribbon), non furono vittime di una sorte così maligna come accadde al Titanic, ma erano splendide e moderne come nessun altra nave prima di loro. Invidiate ed ammirate da tutto il mondo, I loro saloni erano arredati da quadri e sculture di famosi artisti contemporanei e il loro arredamento era affidato ai migliori architetti italiani.
Durante il loro periodo di attività erano al centro delle nostre cronache, spesso i loro interni venivano mostrati in televisione, erano il simbolo Italiano nel mondo della più avanzata tecnologia navale... ma dopo il loro fallimento inglorioso, principalmente imputabile alla loro pessima gestione, queste navi meravigliose sono state completamente ignorate e dimenticate, ignobilmente, come se non fossero mai esistite. Così questo sito è nato per ridare loro una parte del riconoscimento che pienamente meritano.
Un'altra ragione che ci ha portato alla costruzione di questo sito è la grande scarsità (e non solo su internet) di informazioni reperibili su questi due transatlantici e, quando presenti, le informazioni sono piuttosto limitate.
Il nostro intento è quello di raccogliere più informazioni possibili su questa splendida coppia di navi. Molte persone sono state di grande aiuto e siccome non sarebbe possibile raccoglierle tutte qui, i loro nomi sono elencati nella pagina dedicata ai collegamenti e ai ringraziamenti. A chiunque avesse qualsiasi (ed intendiamo proprio qualsiasi) informazione su queste navi, fosse anche solo il colore del tappeto della sala per bambini, saremmo molto grati di essere contattati.
All'interno del sito troverete una dettagliata storia delle due navi, divisa in 3 sezioni. Le pagine "History" e "Design" sono in comune, mentre la sezione "Service" è divisa in "Michelangelo" e "Raffaello". Appena possibile saranno disponibili in Italiano tutte le pagine.
