Animal
Welfare Organizations & No-Kill or
Low-Kill Shelters
City- or county-run
shelters are often unable to keep animals placed there for longer than a few
days before they are euthanized to make room for more. That is why
there are a lot of non-profit organizations around who rescue adoptable
animals from these "shelters." It is a shame for adoptable
dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. to be put down when they can bring
so much joy and love to a home and to your life.
San Francisco Bay Area
Tony
La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF)
Headquartered in
Walnut Creek, California, "ARF is a No-Kill Shelter
dedicated to bringing people and animals together."
On their web site, they offer views of some of the adoptable dogs
and cats, information about their spay and neuter
clinics, information about feral cats, information about
what to do when you find or lose pets, and more.
East
Bay SPCA
"The East Bay SPCA is
dedicated to finding good homes for all adoptable
animals in Alameda County...With adoption centers in
Oakland, Dublin, and with mobile adoptions held
throughout the community, we connect over 3,000 loving
animals with responsible owners every year."
You can view all of the
adoptable animals they have on their web site. Other services
offered by this organization include affordable
veterinary care, low cost spaying/neutering, microchip
implantation, pet education, and dog training. They even
offer free spaying or neutering of pit bulls and pit bull
mixes for Alameda county residents.
Furry
Friends Rescue "An all-volunteer non-profit
Bay Area companion animal rescue organization, comprised entirely of
experienced volunteers who collectively have rescued hundreds of companion
animals and placed them in loving homes. United and inspired by
our compassion for all animals, we focus our talents on saving unadopted
dogs and cats destined to be euthanized in Bay Area shelters."
This
group often shows their fostered dogs and cats in area pet supply
stores for immediate adoption. Check their web site for more information
about their organization.
Humane
Society Silicon Valley Their
mission statement: "To promote value and respect for animal life by connecting people and pets through education and technology."
Like with human adoptions, this organization
has adoption counselors to help put people and animals together
that's good for all. Their other services include spaying and neutering,
microchipping, educational services at schools, and pet supplies
at their in-house store.
Marin
Humane Society "Founded in 1907, The Marin Humane Society is a progressive,
award-winning animal shelter, offering refuge and rehabilitation to
nearly 8,000 animals each year through a myriad of community services
including: adoptions, foster care, behavior and training, humane
education, lost and found pet services, low-cost clinics, and more."
This shelter was in the forefront
of helping the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita animal victims for
the Northern California region.
Peninsula
Humane Society & SPCA
Serving the cities of
San Mateo County in Northern California, this private,
non-profit organization provides shelter and
veterinary services for domestic and wild animals, and
education, pet loss support, and outreach clinics for
humans. Although not a no-kill shelter, this place
boasts that nearly all healthy animals received are
adopted into loving homes.
Pets
In Need
The first no-kill
shelter serving the Peninsula and the Silicon Valley in
the San Francisco Bay Area. Supported by private
donations.
The San Francisco SPCA
Currently in the
USA there is only one city that
guarantees a "No-Kill" policy
for adoptable pets. The shelter that
upholds that policy is the San Francisco SPCA. Hoping to be the model for the New
Millenium for shelters worldwide,
all adoptable animals are given the
chance to be adopted. If they're not,
they're given a warm home at the shelter
for the rest of their lives.
Check out their petcams and photos of
featured pets. Thanks to Julie of the
Public Information office for allowing us
to provide this link to their website.

9 Lives
Cats
An all-volunteer non-profit group, these
ladies foster care for feral and rescued cats in the
North London area of England. All cats in their care are
neutered or spayed to prevent further generations of
unwanted cats. Since all funds, including those to pay
for veterinary care, come from their own pockets,
donations are gladly accepted. Go to their website for
further information and to see the rescued cats in their
care.
Street
Cat Welfare
Associated with the group above, this is
the adoption arm. Adoptable, rescued cats are assured of
neutering or spaying and checked for health. A small
donation is requested for the adopted cats. If you live
in the London area and can open your heart and home to a
loving feline companion, visit this website and give
them a call. Photos of the cats available online.
Worldwide Online Pet Resources
Put together by a
publishing firm, this online resource
lists shelters worldwide. Those few that
are no-kill are marked with a yellow rose
graphic. Sadly, since we first posted
this site, the number of those no-kill
shelters listed have dwindled to only 12,
mostly in the U.K. At least in the U.K.
as here in the U.S., they care about
their pets.

IMOM
This is a not-for-profit corporation
whose mission is "helping people
help pets." They give financial aid
to those who need it to take care of
their pet's medical costs. Euthanizing
your beloved pet because you can't afford
the surgery or extensive rehabilitation
is unfair. This group understands the
heartache of making that kind of decision
and provides the finances to help you
keep your pet.
SPAY-USA This
website helps you locate low-cost spay/neuter clinics near you.
Currently, they have referrals in the following states/areas: Alabama,
California, Florida, Indiana, Massachussetts, MIssissippi, New York
City, Texas, and Washington state. If you are located out of these
areas, you can fill out a registration form and they will contact
you with a referral close to you. All referrals are done by phone,
so that's what's currently provided.
*****
Note: If your community has
rescue groups such as SPCAs and Humane Societies, they may already
have low-cost spay/neuter programs and low-cost veterinary care
available, or be able to refer you to such services. A phone call
is all you need to do to find out. Also consider getting pet care/
health insurance. You should be able to find those companies in
search engines.
