Swee-Heng Lai, borne 1970 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 1992, The Ministry of Education, Taiwan, awarded him a 4 year full scholarship (including living expenses) to study Fine Arts in Music. Swee-Heng majored in Voice, with minor studies in Piano and Trumpet, at the National Taiwan Normal University., (NTNU), Taipei Taiwan. For the past 5 years, he has given vocal recitals in Kuala Lumpur., and has performed in several concerts in Malaysia. Performaces have included Solo Singing in Kuala Lumpur Songs Festiv?al, 1988; playing the role of Papageno in Magic Flute by Mozart in Opera workshop, 1998; playing the role of Count in La Somnanbula by Bellini in Opera Seminar, 1999 and Vocal Soloist in the UPM’1998 Musical Night together with its Symphony Orchestra. Also, he was invited to be a judge for the 1998 National Singing Competition; Southern Region and The Arts Song Open Competition in 1998, Kajang. He was also the Conductor of Confucian Concert Band and Conductor of Students Alumni of Taiwan University Choir. In 2002, Swee-Heng continued his vocal studies under the famous tenor and opera director Joseph Ward O.B.E in Australia and has completed a master of music studies at Queensland Conservatorium of Music . Since commencing his studies at the Conservatorium, Swee-Heng has performed in The Burining Fiery Furnace by Benjamin Britten, The Pilgrim's Progress by Vaughan Williams, I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo, Xerxes by Handel, La Boheme by Puccini and Il barbiere di siviglia by Rossini. He is also actively involve?d in vocal recital and has performed Dichterliebe by Schumann, Lieds by Beethoven, Brahms, Wolf, and a Mahler song cycle "Lieder eines fahlenden gesellen". In 2003, he was involved in the Developing Artist Program of Opera Queensland. He participated in the advanced performance vocal program - Australia National Academy of Music at Dec in the same year. |
