History

In 1949 a group of employees from the Marx Toy Company in Erie County, PA who desired access to credit union services formed the Toymakers Federal Credit Union. They were able to establish accounts for themselves as well as their family members. The original credit union offered affordable auto and personal loans, share savings, and free member insurance. Over the next several years, the handful of employees and family members who originally started the credit union grew to over 1,000 members and a few more services were added. In 1980, the credit union faced a major challenge when the credit union's only sponsor group, Marx Toys, closed their doors forever.

With a desire to continue to serve the faithful members of the credit union, and the members of the community at large, the Board of Directors and Office Manager had a decision to make. They felt the best thing to do would be to change their original charter to a community charter, which would open up membership to anyone who lived or worked in Girard or Lake City, and their immediate family members. The change was submitted to the National Credit Union Adminsitration for approval, and in 1981 the Lake Erie Community Federal Credit Union was approved.

Although the name has changed, our committment to member service has remained steady. We have continued to experience growth in assest size, membership size, and products and services offered. We look forward to serving you, and eagerly look toward the future.
