Tiger Men Dominate Two Rivers Conference Championship To Extend The Streak of Conference Titles That Dates Back to 1998

Hope Mills - "Has it been that long?" Asked Kevin Sullivan, a member of that first conference championship team in 1998. Before the meet, Sullivan spoke briefly to the team, offering some inspirational words. Immediately afterward, he spoke of how far the the South View program has come since that first title in 1998. He continued, "I can remember when we were that team of scrubs out there just trying to survive in those invitational meets. To think of what has happened since is just amazing."

Senior Dwayne Townsend led the Tigers to their 10th straight championship.

Sullivan led the Tigers from 1997 to 1999, earning all conference recognition all three years and anchoring the teams' first two titles in his junior and senior seasons. Sullivan was a part of the great senior class that laid the groundwork for the the Big Orange Running Machine. That senior class also included all conference runners Rory Blake, Joe Biddix and Jesse Springer. Coach Jesse Autry still looks back on that group with fond memories of "growing up" as a program. As Autry said later, "They really started something, didn't they?" It's always nice to see those guys, but to see some of the old guys come back on a night like this was really special."

On Wednesday, the South View men ran to a tenth title in as many years, maintaining the legacy started by Sullivan and Company in that very close 1998 shootout with Terry Sanford. But on October 17th, 2007, no shootout was necessary as South View's men once again steamrolled the competition, took a majority of the all conference spots, dominated the Developmental Race and swept all seven spots on the All Freshmen team. And still, they were totally unsatisfied. One of the slogans for South View Cross Country is "a higher standard than victory." "We ran good enough to win, but we just were not on our A-game tonight. For us, the race is always with ourselves, and overall we just did not have that edge. That comes back on me." Autry stated afterward. "We won ugly." Senior Philip Misklow said afterward. South View may have been a bit tired after winning the highly competitive Tanglewood Invitational last Saturday, but they were all quick to say "no excuses." "On the 27th you will see a different team." Autry said.

Dwayne Townsend led South View with his second-place overall finish. Earning All Conference recognition with Townsend were Derrick Poage, Kenny Hinman, Philip Misklow, Aaron Holmes, Christian Wiscovitch, Cedric Wilson and Keegan Rice.

In the Developmental Race, Erik Smith edged senior Dan Armstrong for the individual win, as the Tiger men swept the top 13 spots and took 25 of the top 29 places in the men's race. Recognized along with Smith and Armstrong for their top 10 performance were Clayton Pierce, Tommy Baldridge, Chris Small, Eddy Chrisman, Kris Sirois, Jose

The young guns had a great night, as well. Autry poined out quickly, that his sophomore class has really been a sight to see this year. "Most folks just seen Kenny, but the truth is, our sophs are flat out good." After Hinman (who is in the 16s, time-wise), the sophomores have six guys already running 18s. Right behind them is a class of super-freshmen who boast seven runners who have gone under the 20 minute mark this year. All seven of them made the all freshman team Wednesday night. Tommy Baldridge, who ran an impressive 18:04, and Eddy Chrisman have really paved the way for the class of 2011, flirting with running in the 17s this year. The combined with Connor Mang, Casey Glomore, Michael Roseberry, Josh Cubitt and Jesse Autry to sweep the seven spots of the All Freshman team.

Once the meet was over, the Tigers were already looking forward to the Regional Championship to be held at South View on Saturday, October 27th. The 2007 version of the Tigers has been pretty good at learning from mistakes and moving past them. Autry hope this trend continues as Pinecrest, West Johnston and Hoggard come to Hope Mills in a week.

South View Finishes as Conference Runner Up for a Second Straight Year; Looks Forward to Regional Championships

Hope Mills - Despite massive personnel losses throughout the 2007 cross country season, the South View Lady Tigers kept their focus and ran a competitive race on Wednesday night at the Two Rivers Conference Championships. Depleted by injuries and other outside factors, the Ladies did not have a single runner in the Developmental Race for the first time ever. "We needed everybody in the championship race." Coach Landis said afterward. "But boy are we proud of these ladies; they ran their hearts out." Led by sophomore Lauren Lee, the Lady Tigers finished second behind a powerhouse Terry Sanford team that has been ranked in the states' top ten most of the year.

Joining Lee on the 2007 Two Rivers All Conference squad were Lakeisha Parker, freshman phenom, Rebecca Misklow, Cassandra Serje and Annette Sem. German foreign exchange student Helena Rafolsky missed an all conference spot by one spot. Along with Misklow, Brittney Stevens earned All Freshmen recognition.

The South View coaches were also very excited about the performance of the sophomore trio of Amanda Anderson, Jessica Bean and Katherine Merritts. "We are a very young team and I like the attitude of this group.

"These girls have really faced adversity this year. We cannot say enough about the way they have pulled together." Landis said. She continued, "They have set a goal to get back to the state championship, and it is a very realistic goal."
