Kestrel's Sailing Adventures |
Kestrel's Adventures continue as Jay Fraser and Leslie Fournier prepare to move to Salt Spring Island, Canada. In October 2006, Kestrel is journeying out the Columbia, North to Washington state in preparation for importation into Canada. Jay and Leslie's adventures on Kestrel will continue on in Canada with explorations of the many islands and inlets. The original adventure: Leslie Fournier and Jay Fraser left Scappoose, Oregon in July of 1998 in their sailboat, a 34-foot cutter-rigged sloop named "Kestrel". In nearly three years they sailed up to Canada, down to Mexico, along the coast of Central America, down to Costa Rica, then brought Kestrel home to Oregon in 2001. If 10,000 miles doesn't sound like a lot of traveling, remember that our average speed is 4 knots, or about 4 1/2 mph. If we were in a car travelling at 55 mph, we'd have travelled 122,000+ miles, or nearly 19 trips across the United States -- round trip! Jay and Leslie enjoyed many experiences along the way (like watching a humpback whale surface beside the boat), and failed to enjoy some other ones (like the knockdown off Cedros Island.) They tried to share some of their thoughts and feelings with their friends back home by e-mailing newsletters at irregular intervals. This website contains those newsletters, along with other interesting facts. We hope that others thinking about beginning such an adventure might find this website useful as a reference. We also hope that those who will never have a chance to get out enjoy the adventure inside the stories.
