Well I have to say this site is very Biased. The main reason for Arginetian invading the Falklands was becuase of the oil found in an around the Falklands. Your claim to the Falklands is becuase of a treay which didnt include them, and the fact that there at the time of the war not one arginetine settler on the Island. I doubt if many of the 200 settlers even spoke spanish. You have misquoted the amount of Planes lost by your FAA. 28 Planes harriers shot down I think, a far cry from 4. And now the contrevsial General Belgrano. War Crime? No. First off the men on the ship are Soldier to one extent or another. They are legitimate targets in war time. General Belgrano, by your own admission was a powerfu ship, which could have damaged the task force. Hence it was sunk. Nothing else to it. What about HMS Sheffeild and SS Antlantic Conveyer? Your country was the agressor. Your country started the war. The Falklands are ours by self-determination and the mere fact the UK landed on the Falklands before anyone else. Your country took the gamnble that the UK wouldnt fight for 2000 Men, women and Children and miscalcuted badly. Blame your former government. Blame yourselves for letting it happen. But dont blame us. Also what of the rather dubious actions of the Argintine Soldiers on the Falklands themselves? I seriously doubt the bloodless invasion order, since As stated below White Phos was used in room clearnace. Anybody who know what WP is, knows that it not a nice way to die, and definitely doesnt go with bloodess orders. I also found that you missed out half the Falklands war. Why is this? I see no mention of Pebble Island, San Carlos Bay, Goose Green, Wireless ridge, Mount Loungdon etc. I see no mention of the British men who laid down their lives for their fellow country men? Where are the mentions of 2 and 3 Para? 3 Commando Brigade? The Ghurka's and the Blues and Royals? The Fleet Air Arm? Which saved the lives of many a British Sailor? Your account of the Falklands War, is half complete and very biased, yet it is seemed to me, to be passed off as an objective and complete account of events, when its clear to anyone with half a mind that it is a very subjective and incomplete verison of events.

I would like to know if the Armada has any plans to replace it aircraft carrier? And if so, are they planning to build a new one or buy a older one. From which nation would they most likely look to for a used carrier or to build a new one? Also does the Armada have plans to expand its Submarine fleet? Thanks you! Mark Shotzberger P.S. Dear Santiago, Once more I am signing your guest book from school. I come too late at night to do e-mail. I think your guest book is more reliable than the school e-mail. My students mail me some stuff and half the time it doesn't go through. I am leaving for the UK on hursday, I remember about getting your stuff for the "Pampa". I read the comments on the Falklands (Malvinas) site about the law suit against UK for the Belgrano sinking. It crossed my mind about the statue of limitations (18 years after the incident). It is sad, its legality can be argued for years to come. It was asically attacked outside the exclision zone, but also (militarily speaking) was a viable target posing a threat to the task force, so there is the dilema. Every time I think about the war, I still do not understand the order to retreat the fleet. That wi l bug me for years. Well, good luck in your final chapter as a layer. Question: once you are in your new site, what about this one, are you going to still keep it? Best regards, Albert

I enjoyed your web site very much, and would like to thank you for the effort and time you have put into it. I have been interested in the Armada Argentina for many years. My Grandfather worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard from 1924-45, and had occasion to work on the battleship Moreno when she was converted to full oil firing and given a machinery overhaul in 925. I am looking for information on the vessels of the Armada Argentina. Information is readily available on post-World War II ships, but very hard to find on older ships. I have the complete ship’s histories for the battleships Rivadavia and Moreno and specifications for the Armored Cruiser Buenos Aires (1886-1931). I also have very basic information on the British built Indepencia and Libertad (1880-82), and the Almirante Brown (1880). I am unable to locate basic specifications for the following ships: Armored Cruisers: the Garibaldi Class ships (unknown number of vessels), the Nueve de Julio, the Vienticinco De Mayo, and the Patagonia. Destroyers: the Buenos Aires Class, the Mendoza II Class, the Churucca Class, the San Luis Class, the La Plata Class, the Catamarca Class, and the Mendoza Class. I have found several references to destroyer’s names, but I have no idea what class they fit nto or what their specifications were. If you know of a good book that would contain the information, would you please e-mail me with the tittle and author? I read some Spanish, so the book need not be published in English, and I can special-order it even if it was never distributed in the Uni ed States. Alternately, do you know of WebPages that would contain more information on the Armada Argentina between the world wars? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Bob Henneman

An Argentine application to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to investigate the sinking of the cruiser General Belgrano in the 1982 Falklands Conflict with the loss of more than 320 crew has been met by surprise and rejection in the United Kingdom. Lawyers acting for relatives of crewmen killed when the 13,500-ton cruiser was torpedoed, plan to take their case to the European Court next week, alleging British contravention of international conventions governing the conduct of war. The move was described as preposterous and unwarranted by the former Governor of the Falkland Islands at the time of the Argentine invasion, Sir Rex Hunt. Britain, he pointed out, was defending British territory and British people. Argentina’s military junta were the aggressors in that conflict. Relatives should take action against them, not against the United Kingdom. The Ministry of Defence repeated its view that the sinking was justified in the circumstances. The Conservative Party Defence spokesman called it a justified act of war against what was a warship. Another Conservative Member of Parliament, Gerald Howarth, a former close aide of Margaret Thatcher, called the court attempt “utterly absurd”. But a Labour MP, Tam Dalyell, renewed his long-running criticism of Prime Minister Thatcher’s decision. In what became the most controversial act of the conflict, causing most casualties, the Belgrano was sunk on Sunday , May 2nd, by two torpedoes fired from the British submarine Conqueror captained by Commander Christopher Wreford Brown, who was only 36 at the time. Her had detected the Belgrano and her two escort destroyers, Hipolito Bouchard and Piedra Bueno, and tracked them for two days. The British Commander, Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward, was convinced that his vulnerable Task Force, was the target of a planned Argentine Naval pincer attack from a battle group led by the aircraft carrier Veinte Cinco de Mayo in the North, and the Belgrano group in the south, deploying aircraft, exocet missiles and the cruiser’s fifteen six-inch and eight five-inch guns, all bigger than any guns in his entire force. He sought and got permission from Margaret Thatcher’s War Cabinet for the rules of engagement to be changed to attack the Belgrano outside the British 200-mile total exclusion zone around the Falkland Islands. Several days earlier, on April 23rd, as the Task Force approached the Islands to liberate its 2,000 people from Argentine occupation, the British Government had sent an official warning to the Argentine Junta. This said that, in exercise of the United Kingdom’s rights of self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, any warship or military aircraft threatening to interfere with the Task Force anywhere in the South Atlantic would encounter “the appropriate response”. Senior Argentine naval officers were later reported to regard the attack as a justified act of war which they themselves would have taken in a similar situation. British naval officers believe that if Belgrano’s commander, Captain Hector Bonzo, and his crew of more than 1,000, had taken better precautions, and the two escort destroyers had begun an immediate rescue operation, the casualties would not have been so high. Prime Minister Thatcher described the sinking of the Belgrano as one of the most decisive military actions of the war. She dismissed what she called “malicious and misleading nonsense” about the decision, which, she said, was taken for “strictly military not political reasons.... There was a clear military threat which could not be ignored. Subsequent events more than justified what was done”. The Argentine Navy withdrew and never emerged from its home ports again. While there was heavy loss of life on the Belgrano, it may well have saved lives in the long run. If two British submarines, Spartan and Superb, searching for the aircraft carrier to the north had found her, Admiral Woodward intended to attack that ship as well. The attack on Belgrano , as well as the sinking two days later of the British destroyer Sheffield by an exocet missile, ended attempts of an negotiated settlement, which at the time was being encouraged by President Belaunde Terry of Peru. Any action in the European Court would take many months to come to a conclusion and is thought by international lawyers to have little chance of success. It is also a precedent which could encourage further action against ex-President General Galtieri and his Junta colleagues who were tried, found guilty and sentenced to detention by Argentina itself for their conduct of the conflict in 1982. Harold Briley, London

I have just finished a postcard of the battleship Moreno at Balboa, on her transit through Panama in 1924 (ch ck out my webpage). I'm pretty sure her sistership Rivadavia never made it to the Isthmus. Another question is did Argentina's aircraft Carriers ever transit the canal ? Thanks. clive fennessy P.S. You site is very interesting. With regard to your Naval Aviation page though you mention four UK vessels sunk - I thought it was six? HMS Coventy (a type 42 destroyer like Sheffield) was struck by several contact bombs which eventually caused fires that resulted in her sinking. As for the sixth ship wasn't that another Type 21? On the other side of the coin though I can assure you HMS Invincible was not damaged - I watched her come back into Portsmouth. However I have seen pictures of HMS Hermes return (the flagship carrier) to Plymouth and she did have damage presumably from c ntact bombs. Anyway it's interesting to see a site from an Argentine perspective. Thanks

Eduardo Zaldibar TFRE USA

A very well constructed site with an interesting perspective on the 1982 war. The information included in the account of the conflict is very biased however. There was no hit on the Invicible and the RN shot down an awful lot more planes than you claim. T ere are many points I take issue with ( the 'bloodless' invasion order - which involved the B. Tactico troops room clearence using phosophorous grenades and machine-guns for one)but it is refreshing to see an Argentinian perspective of the conflict. From a British point of view, it does seem strange to see only information about the invasion( or liberation as you would call it)and not the actual battles and eventual surrender of the Argentinian Forces. A very intersting site.

Congratulations on your site. I was particularly interested to read about the Falklands (Malvinas) War from the perspective of an Argentinian. However, I do feel the site is perhaps more biased than it should be. For instance it neglects to mention that o the 2000 permenant inhabitants not one spoke Spanish as their first language. Every single one of the inhabitants could trace back their ancestry to the United Kingdom. The first recorded landing on the islands (it was originally uninhabited) was by the nglish explorer, John Strong in 1690. The first permenant settlement on the Islands was on East Falkland and was founded by French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in 1764. The name Islas Malvinas dervives from the fact that many of these first set lers came from the rench port of St Malo. The other island, West Falkland was settled by the British in 1765. In 1767 the Spanish bought the French settlement. On the 14th July 1770 they forced the British to evacute the West island, however after threat f war the British settlement was restored the next year. In 1774 the British withdrew from the island for economic reasons. The newly independant Argentina set up the first Argentinian settlement in 1828 after proclaiming sovereignty 8 years earlier. In 1 31 the US warship the USS Lexington annhilated the Argentinian colony in retaliation for a seperate incident. In order to stop the Americans gaining control of the Islands the British took control of islands. By 1885 the British settlement is self-support ng and numbers 1800. In 1964 Argentina began a debate in the UN over ownership of the Islands. Argentina based it's argument on treaties signed in 1493 and 1494 in which Spain and Portugal had recognised the islands as Spanish. Argentina suggested that due to the proximity of the islands to the Argentinian mainland they should be considered to have been part of the revolts that lead to the independance of Spain's South American colonies. The other main argument that colonial rule was outdated and unfair. The British argument w s that the islands' ownership should be decided by National self-determination (a founding principle of the UN) and that subjecting the British population of the Falklands to Argentinian rule against their will would be cruel and unjust. At the time of the Argentinian invasian, Argentina was ruled by a dictator, General Galtieri, whose military rule of Argentina had seen thousands imprisoned or killed. The economic situation was dire and there was a severe possiblity of him being ovethrow . Surely there is a case for the invasion of the islands being a method for raising his popularity. He did not believe Britain would attemp to retake the islands due to the fact that they were 8000 miles away from Britain. e was however very wrong.

Dear Santiago: Although I'm a born Argentinian, instead of using my tongue will address this comments in English. Thanks a lot for your site. It will share some insights from our point of view with the anglo-saxon people. Very impresive your comments about the Malvinas slands war. I agree with you about the sinking of the Manuel Belgrano to be considered as a war crime and hope in the future justice will prevail over that treacherous act... In 1982 I was pursuing my career as Electronic Engineer in the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional Facultad Regional Córdoba and some of my professors were employees of the Aircraft Military Factory (FMA). As per my recollection the Exocet missiles were sold by France and shipped to Argentina just before the conflict, however the software component to "run" or launch such missiles was seized by the French obeying the NATO conventions regarding member countries entering in war conflicts; rendering the Exocets seless. At the time those missiles had to be launched; the missile's hardware was reverse-engineered by Argentinian Engineers and some sort of "hacked" program developed to effectively use such ordinance as expected. The attachments to the aircraft had to be modified as well. Thanks God the Super Etendards were made by the French and doing so was feasible. The damage inflicted to the Invincible did not came as a result of serendipity or luck by itself. It was the accomplishment of men, brains, skills, guts and argentinian "viveza" fighting against all odds. Thanks for the music as well. Your site is great.

Are there any plans for the Argentina Navy to acquire a new aircraft carrier? To bad Argentina cannot afford to either build a new light carrier or buy the last of the French's conventionally powered carriers....Foch. A more affordable alternative would be to buy, convert with ski jump and refurbish a recently retired US Navy Iwo Jima LPH helicopter carriers. Such a vessel could be used as a light carrier. Of course, your country's Navy would have to acquire AV-8B+ Ha riers. The SH-3s could be operated off of such a vessel. Modified SH-3s with Italian AEW radar would also be needed. Would make for a very affordable alternative to a larger carrier. Would appreciate hearing whether or not your country's Navy has plans for a new aircraft carrier. By the way, great site. Really enjoyed it.

Hello again,Santiago I was surfing your site and I found out the list of British ships sunk or damgaed by the ARA. One ship, the Invencible, it says in your site, pressumably was damaged by the air strikes. There was, I remember in 1986, there was an article in Aviation Week bout the attack to the Invencible. I recall, 5 airplanes were involved. Two super Etendards, one with the AM-39 Exocet, the other to guide A-4s in navigation. Those were refueled by tanker KC-130. The flight took off toward the South, near the Antartic, t en east, then North and attacking the British fleet from East to West. I hope you can picture this. The Exocet did strike the Invencible, and one or two Skyhwaks were shot down. The ARA did not manage to sink the Invencible, not enough firepower to bring he carrier down. I was inches from the Invencible in Portsmouth, England. But, the report stressed the quality and geniousity of the strike. Apparently, off the record, there were rumors that the exact location of the Invencible was revealed by a Soviet sa ellite. If the ARA and FAA would have sent all available aircrafts, Skyhwaks, Mirages, Etendards etc. following a missile strike on the fleet, especially the CARRIERS, Argentina could have won the war. Just a thought! You can request Aviation Week past is ues (1986) to find that article. Good Luck!

THE ARGENTINE MILITARY SHOULD NEVER LOSE THE FOCUS THAT SHE EXHIBITED IN THE 1982 MALVINAS CONFLICT WITH THE U.K. THE U.S. AND ARGENTINA HAVE BEEN STRATEGIC PARTNERS FOR DECADES NOW. THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING THIS STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP SHOULD NOT D MINISH, IN THIS POST COLD WAR ERA, AS NEW THREATS ARE EMERGING TOWARDS MAINTAINING PEACE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, NAMELY IN THE FORM OF CHINA, NORTH KOREA, AND SOME OF THE ISLAMIC STATES. ARGENTINA POSED A GREAT THREAT TO THE STATUS QUO, IN THE MALVINAS DURING THE CONFLICT IN 82', AND ALMOST WON THE CONFLICT. HER MILITARY ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THIS TIMEFRAME ARE NOTEWORTHY, AND SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN. SHE IS A WORTHY ALLY...WITH OR WIT OUT EXOCETS.. THE AUTHOR SHOULD NOTE, THAT THIS READER BELIEVES THAT THE SKYHAWK PILOTS WERE THE TRUE HEROS OF THE CONFLICT...FLYING, ALMOST LITERALLY, DOWN THE STACKS OF THE H.M.S. SHIPS...ANY FOOL CAN LAUNCH AN EXOCET FROM A SAFE DISTANCE OF FORTY PLUS KILOMETERS, {G VEN THE PROPER GUIDANCE, AND COORDINATES FROM A NEPTUNE, OR PREPOSITIONED TROOPS, AFLOAT OR ASHORE}....THE SKYHAWK PILOTS FLEW INTO HARMS WAY, AT MAST TOP HEIGHTS....TO WRECK ALMOST AS MUCH DAMAGE AS THE ENTENDARDS AND EXOCETS DID..THE AUTHOR SHOULD MAKE ORE SPECIFIC MENTION OF THIS FACT. ALSO, I WOULD APPRECIATE FURTHER CLARIFICATION OF THE HIT ON H.M.S. INVINCIBLE BY THE ARGENTINE FORCES. I HAVE, UNTIL NOW, BEEN EXPOSED ONLY TO THE BRITISH SIDE OF THE STORY...

NOVEMBER 9, 1999 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INFORMATION ON THE 25 OF MAYO. I AM WRITING YOU FROM SCHOOL BECAUSE AT HOME, I KIND OF SHORT ON TIME OR SLIPS MY MIND. THANKS ANYWAY. YOU MENTIONED IN YOUR E-MAIL THAT THE USS RANGER AND THE USS INDEPENDENCE COULD BE A CHOICE FOR THE ARGENTINEAN NAVY. I HAVE A BROTHER ON BOARD THE USS CONSTELLATION CV-64, ON AN EA-6B SQUADRON. I TELL YOU THOSE SHIPS ARE BIIIIIIG! FOR YOUR REFERENCE THE ORIGINAL SERIES OF SUPERCARRIERS CV-59 THROUGH CV-62 WERE THE FORRESTAL, SARATOGA, RANGER AND INDEPANDENCE. OF THOSE FORRESTAL BECAME A TRAINING SHIP. SARATOGA IN MOTHBALLS, RANGER SOLD TO GILLETE CO. (THEY WILL HAVE A LOT OF RAZOR LADES OUT OF IT) AND INDEPENDENCE LAST DECOMMISSIONED, FORMELLY STAIONED IN JAPAN. THESE SHIPS ARE BASICALLY VERY CLOSE TO 1000 FT IN LENGTH (ABOUT 300 METERS) AND WEIGH IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF 65,000 -75,000 TONS. THEY CAN CARRY ABOUT 70-80 PLANES AND A REW OF 4,500 MEN. NOW, YOU TELL ME HOW IS THE ARGENTINEAN NAVY GOING TO FILL THE SHIP UP (IF BOUGHT FOR EXAMPLE. A BUNCH OF SUPER ETENDARDS AND TRACKERS COULD DANCE ON HER DECK. THE CLEMENCAU O THE OTHER HAND IS ABOUT 32,000 TONS AND ABOUT 230 METERS, MORE SUITABLE FOR THE ARA. THIS IS GOOD GAME OF GUESSING WHAT THE ARA WILL DO. I CHECKED YOUR SITE, I THINK THE ARA IS GETTING BETTER IN EQUIPMENT AS COMPARED WHAT THEY HAD BACK IN 1982. WELL I HAVE TO GO NOW. THANKS FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED IF YOU HEAR ANYTHING ON THE CARRIER. THANKS

YOU HAVE AN EXCELLENT WEB-PAGE THANK YOU FOR IT. BY THE WAY, DO YOU KNOW, AFTER THE SCRAPPING OF THE 25 OF MAYO, IF THE ARA IS PLANNING TO REPLACE IT? A LOGICAL THING TO DO IS TO BUY THE CLEMENCAU FROM FRANCE (DECOMMISSIONED IN 1997)OR BUY ONE FROM US. TH QUESTION IS HOW DO YOU FILL IT UP! LET ME KNOW AT YOU CONVENIENCE. IF MY E-MAIL DOES NOT WORK. MY ADDRESS IS: DR.ALBERT ATKINS, 1169 PHILLIP SMITH COURT, COLTON, CA. 92324

Dear Mr Aversa, I read in your section on the Veiticinquo de Mayo that she was instrumental in the Beagle Channel crisis. What was this crisis, could you let me know more about it please? Thank you for your help. Best regards, Christophe Jaureguiberry

You've done a nice job on your site, although I must tell you that I prefer the no-frames version. Also, although I speak some Spanish, I appreciate the fact that your site is in English.

Your site is good indeed. I would like to know is there are plans in ARA to replace the 25 de Mayo aircraft carrier. I know that the French are going to retire the Clemencau soon. Are there any talks with the French to get her?
