Horsham Junior Rugby - March 10th 2002 vs. Uckfield Under 13s

Horsham 48 Uckfield 0

The last time Horsham played Uckfield was in 2000 when they lost and yet went on to become Sussex champions. So it is a measure of the progress that Horsham have made since then that they were able to turn the tables on the East Sussex side. Their team play in keeping the ball alive going forwards was as good as any under 13 side this season. Uckfield played their part in an entertaining game but were unable to recover after Horsham's lightening start.

Horsham started well playing downhill into a strong wind. Hooker Lewis Townsend made a good run into the heart of the Uckfield defence and forced the offside but the chance seemed to have gone when the resulting penalty was turned over. However Billy Twelvetrees was able to regain possession and put Joe Davis clear to score in the corner. Excellent continuity from Horsham with Sam Rice, Giles Barber and Leon Quinnell all combining well set up Davis to add a second and further good team play saw Nicholas Bell steal the ball in the ruck and set up Twelvetrees to score between the posts. Barber and Quinnell combined again following up a kick crossfield and secured possession for Twelvetrees to score the fourth only midway through the first half and before Uckfield had had any chance of possession themselves. Uckfield forced their way into the match following this score and mounted a strong attack close to the Horsham line but after their scrum was turned over, Twelvetrees emerged with the ball and ran the ball back into the Uckfield half and though tackled, interchanged passes with Davis before going on to score the fifth.

Uckfield pressurised Horsham again at the start of the second half but infringed and Horsham got the resulting penalty wide to Quinnell who ran powerfully to score between the posts. Horsham continued to handle well until a careless forward pass conceded a scrum to Uckfield. Ed Mardle then ran in the seventh after Townsend had again penetrated the defence and from the restart, Jonathan Ordidge collected the kick and made inroads into the Uckfield defence with Quinnell supporting well to take it up and finish.
