Following overnight frost and the previous day's home fixtures, the Cranbrook pitch was heavy and damp. With Tunbridge Wells top of the Supervictory League and Cranbrook unbeaten over their 5 previous outings, this fixture was destined to be a closely fought affair with both teams determined to prove themselves winners on the day.

Early play from both Cranbrook and Tunbridge Wells was evenly balanced with both forward packs keen to exert their authority under difficult playing conditions. Open passing play was kept to a minimum with the Cranbrook forwards matching their larger county neighbours tackle for tackle. Scrums and line outs were keenly fought with the Cranbrook forwards, Tresize, Catt, Smith and Kane more than matching a considerably taller and weightier pack from Tunbridge Wells. Ten minutes into the first half, the controlled Cranbrook start slipped, when the Tunbridge backs moved the ball fast to the right wing to create an overlap from which they ran in their first try. The conversion was missed. Despite this setback,Cranbrook dug in and countered with several pieces of controlled forward play from Farris and O,Neil. With Cranbrook suffering from a makeshift back line with injuries at Fly half and centre positions, the industrious Cranbrook forward possesion was frequently undermined by weak passing from loose ball play through the backs. Tunbridge Wells capitalised on this weakness and just before half time were rewarded with a second try to bring the half time score to Cranbrook 0 - Tunbridge Wells 10.

Following a half time chivy from coach Dave Catt, Cranbrook started the second half with greater resolve. Determined probing forward play from Tresize and Catt, coupled with support from Farris and O'Neil provided Cranbrook with a platform for a second half recovery. This was to prove ambitious. After five minutes, the growing Cranbrook pressure was reversed following a ruck ball deep inside the Tunbridge Wells 25 yard line. Quick recovery passing and positional kicking from the Tunbridge Wells backs, made good ground inside the Cranbrook half and this momentum was rewarded with a third try. Cranbrook tried in vain to recover from this telling third try and were dismayed by another Tunbridge Wells try and conversion after fifteen minutes. Despite the Cranbrook 'never say die' spirit, Tunbridge Wells claimed a brace of trys in the closing minutes, but the final score of Cranbrook 0 - Tunbridge Wells 32 misrepresented what was a very exciting evenly fought match.
