CRAWLEY v TUNBRIDGE WELLS

September 23rd 2001

Crawley 5

 Tunbridge Wells 29

The currant champions of Sussex and Kent opened the newly formed Victory Super 13s League.

Having had the pleasure of taking the Crawley fly-half and centre on tour at Easter Tunbridge Wells were fully aware of the task ahead. Both sides were below full strength for this encounter but still produced a very high level of rugby on a good pitch conducive to an open running game.

Tunbridge Wells strong forwards held the upper hand in the opening encounters which brought stern defence from the defiant Crawley side. Under constant pressure during the first half  Crawley conceded two trys both scored by Wells key players Sam Stone and Chris Clemow.

Crawley opened the second half in determine mood but good defensive play by the Wells backs limited Crawleys opportunities to run the ball. Wells forwards again began to secure most of the ball and gave their backs excellent service. The forwards supporting play in a number of phases. The pressure began to tell and Wells ran in another three trys.

William Robinson, Robert Hendley and Luke Giles all performing superbly.

At no time did Crawley lay down, every point was hard won and their persistence paid off with a try of their own before no-side. David Keyte scoring from close range.

The many spectators enjoyed an excellent game, but the result was not what Gerry was looking for, although he eventually brought us a beer afterwards.

Many thanks to Crawley for being excellent hosts for the day.
