Ross's review from Birch Hill in Old Bridge, NJ on 7-10-99

We got there at 8:15 PM and on ticketmaster.com, it said the concert started
at 7 PM so I was worried that we would have missed Shades Apart... I was
also worried the venue would be sold out... It turns out the venue was NOT
sold out and a group called "Last Perfect Thing" was also opening for the
Marvies and I got there about halfway through their performance...These
guys were actually really good, they were locals and knew how to ROCK
shit... it was also cool cuz they gave out to EVERYONE a free sampler CD
which included a sticker!! anyways, after they played, they were chillen with the
crowd and I was talkin to one of the bassists and he was real cool...I was
standing up front and was kinda boxed in, so I asked him to grab me a
bottle of water from the bar area and he actually got me two
for the price of one, so he was a cool guy!!!!

Next up was Shades Apart, and lemme tell you, if you HAVE NOT
heard of them, you have have HAVE to go to shadesapart.com and
check them OUT!!! They HAVE to be the BEST opening act EVER...
as a matter of fact, if Marvelous 3 was not the best performers in the world,
Shades Apart could have headlined this tour! Anyways, I have seen
SHades Apart with Mercy River and Local H and they played basically
the same stuff this time as last time but this time the crowd was really
into them and a lot of people knew their stuff... It has to help that
their song "stranger by the day" is in the movie "American Pie".
(which happens to be the best movie I have seen for a very long time)
During Shades APart, I was kinda signaling to the backround vocalist/bassist,
Kevin Lynch and tryin to get his attention which is no easy feat cuz I am a guy...
Anyways, he saw me at one point and saw me singin all their songs so
after they were done playing he saw me and came over... i told him
that Shades Apart kicks ass and that I didn't get a chance to take
my CD with me to the concert which I wanted to get signed by the band...
so I told him that I am gonna be there on Thursday in New York City
(Irving Plaza) and that I want him to remember me till then so he
can sign my stuff... he told me he would try before but they are doing
some live record that day and he might be busy, so he said definitely
after that show... well, right after I was done talking to him, the drummer
from Shades Apart was leaving the stage and he had given out almost
all of his drumsticks, but he hadn't given out one last one and he gave
it to my girlfriend.... so, she was happy, and I realized what an awesome
band and awesome people the guys from Shades Apart are... If I haven't
mentioned it, GO CHECK THEM OUT!!!!

Next up was Dovetail Joint and I was REALLY lookin forward to seeing
them because I have had their CD for the longest time but I had yet
to see them live... All I can say is I was disappointed...

(note: Julie has edited out this part because she loves Dovetail Joint, so,
for good reviews, you can go to my DTJ page)

Last, of course, were the showstoppas themselves, THE MARVIES.....
They are so so so great in concert... I mean, we all know their CD
is great but it gets so much better live... they came out to some
funks rap song (note: Prince by the way, i think Pussy Control?)
and it was really funny... then Butch said if the crowd didn't
get louder he would pull some TLC on our ass... and then he
started singing waterfalls! also, at some point, he mentioned
how he wanted to kill the backstreet boys cuz they take up the MTV time...
HOW RIGHT IS BUTCH!!!! well, their act is AWESOME...
always active, always getting the crowd involved... always flickin
their picks at each other, the crowd, or from each others
mouth to the other guys... crazy stuff.... the crowd sand every
lyric to every song and Butch was lovin it... he stopped singing at parts
of songs and was like "wow, i didnt know you guys knew the words"
and in "Freak Of the Week" at the part where he usually sings "tell me
I sold out......" he didn't sing and let the crowd and when we were doing so,
he was saying, "OK, you sold out"..... it was funny...anyways,
I had only seen them before when they opened for Eve 6 and their
headlining show is even better... now I am sooooo pumped cause I get to see
them again on Thursday...another cool thing about the concert was that
Dovetail Joint was givin out free stickers after the show to EVERYONE instead
of charging two bucks... I thought it was cool of them...

Well guys, that is about it for now... this was pretty long now that I look back on it...
ALl i know was this is the BEST concert I ever went to... which includes Eve 6,
Marvelous 3 and Stretch princess in February.....
