CCSL Knock Out trophy round two, saw the Strikers hurting from two defeats on
the trot. Roni pleaded passionately for that little bit extra from his troops in
his pre match discussion leaving not a dry eye in the house. Thus it was full of
fire and brimstone that the Strikers marched onto a perfectly prepared Numweek
Park.
Twenty minutes into the opening stanza, and it looked as though these pleas
had touched the hearts of the SS defence. Numerous attacks down the Dux right
wing were foiled by one of the stalwarts of the Sunnyside defense, Timmy Tackle.
Any foray which did breach Tackles, show 'em the sideline defense, were soon
brought to an abrupt halt by either Trig or Dirty Dave.
It was sad to see the Dux strikers revert to what some would call dirty pool,
when they started to lob head high balls across the Strikers goal box, which on
occasion left the lads looking like Rabbits, caught in the headlights of the
50/50 ball.
From 0-0 at the 20 minute mark, the Strikers were left facing down the barrel
of a potential pantsing come half time, and 4-0.
Fantastic citrus delight at half time sent the team back out onto the park
with a surprising spring in their steps despite the score line. All caution was
thrown to the wind by the boys, and although they did concede a further five
goals, the standard of football in the second stanza was of a very high
standard. To put it simply, The Dux were lucky there wasn't a further couple of
halves. A couple of opportunities from the Strikers front line, who seem to have
lost some of the goal scoring knack they had early season went begging before
Dirty Dave managed to fat one hard enough into Drag'M s sweed to rebound into
the top left of the Dux's goal. It may have been 7-1, but the moral victory was
ours.
After 90 minutes of toil, Dux De Lux deservedly came out 9-1 victors. A score
line that many of the Strikers supporters thought didn't accurately reflect what
was a barnstorming match.
