clef and notes Essex County Summer Players violin and bow

It was the summer of 1975, and a group of highly motivated high school and college students in West Orange decided to embark on a new enterprise. United by their love for great music, the young men and women came together to form the West Orange Collegiate Music Association. The organization, probably the area’s first summer orchestra, was perfect for those musical students who were home for the summer. It had a strong beginning, and provided many enjoyable summer evenings of music until it finally ran out of steam a decade or so later. But the idea was a good one and remained a viable concept, although nobody would act on it until the beginning of the new millennium. A former WOCMA cello player, now a middle-aged man, remembered those early summers, updated it accordingly, and the ECSP began its life in June 2001. Now in its sixth season, the group once again provides what the WOCMA had striven for: to give local musicians of all ages a chance to play and perform during the summer, and to provide musical experiences for the Essex County community Composed of over 60 members, including amateur, semi-, and professional musicians, the ECSP proudly presents this summer’s program and looks forward to many future seasons.
