PROJECT 1

Your first math project will be an easy one. You will be given a word problem which you must solve, and clearly explain each step along the way.
Font: Times New Roman
Size: 12
Length: You must fully answer the question and provide all explanations necessary for each step you take. Keep thinking – Why did I do that?
It must be typed. Mathematical work may be done in pencil. Make your paper pleasant to look at; not all crowded and messy. Be sure that you have answered all three parts.

THE PROBLEM A computer printer sells for $280. The printer goes on sale for 25% off the original price.
Part A. -- How much is the sale price of the printer?

Part B. -- Suppose another 20% were taken off the sale price. Would the 25% discount and the 20% discount be the same as one 45% discount?

Part C. -- Use what you know about finding the percent of a number to explain your answer.

The finished project is due by Thursday Sept. 11, 2008. Points will be deducted for lateness.

PROJECT 2

For the second project, you are to type a well-written and thought out description of three ways in which negative numbers are used in real life. Your work should be one to two pages long, and may included pictures.
Your finished project is due by Nov. 5, 2008. Points will be deducted for lateness.

PROJECT 3

For the third project, you are to do a research project which shows a good amount of effort. You may choose the subject from the topics listed below and start investigating on the Internet, in books, magazines or any available source you can think of. The goal is to independently acquire new knowledge and then to present those findings in as interesting and creative a way as possible. The project will be in three parts:

1) the written report. This must be typed (with size 12 Arial or Times New Roman font and 1.5 spacing), at least three pages long and have a cover. It should contain a summary of what you have learned from your research and include all the things that you found interesting about your topic. It should of course be in your OWN words. The bibliography must contain at least three sources, preferably with at least one book.

2) the poster. This will be graded on originality, creativity and usefulness as a tool in the presentation.

3) oral presentation. Everyone MUST give a presentation of findings to the class for three minutes. Reports are NOT to be read.
