| The first evidence of formal education in Sumeria, and the world, dates back to 2500 B.C.E. in the form of school texts. Sumerian students were instructed in literacy, botany, zoology, mathematics, geology among others. Education was open to any boy who could afford it. Boys started schooling at six or seven and continued for up to 10 years. Boys often followed in their fathers professions. There were many famous Sumerian scribes, in particular, Sin-leqe-unnini who is supposed to have written of the Epic of Gilgamesh and Kabti-ilani- marduk author of the Epic of creation. For over 2000 years Sumerian was the Mesopotamian language of law, religion and education. |
