FREDDY/JASON/ASH WANTS/HOPES/PLANS/NOTES/ DEATHCOUNT/ALTERNATE ENDING The first plot ideas I came up with in October 2003 - FREDDY VS JASON: THE EVIL DEAD - Jason is alive and killing in Crystal Lake. Freddy is in Hell and desperate to get out. Ash is having nightmares about the Deadite problem returning in Crystal Lake. Everything comes together in a large, epic battle. FREDDY VS JASON: THE EVIL DEAD - Having lost his job at S-Mart, Ash is working as a bus boy at the newly opened Crystal Lake Resorts. We're introduced to his co-workers and the people staying at the resort, which includes a group of teenagers, recent high school graduates. Jason stalks the woods, killing anyone foolish enough to go out there. Freddy starts infiltrating the guests' dreams, learning about the Necronomicon through Ash's nightmares. We find out the Necronomicon was found at the Voorhees house and seized as evidence. Eventually Freddy storms the Crystal Lake Police Department to get the book, but Jason shows up and fucks the place up. Ash and the surviving teens go to the nearest S-Mart, to the "Hardware" section. They get weapons, then go to fight Freddy and Jason in a battle to the death. Over the summer I rewatched the Nightmare, F13 and Evil Dead series, one movie a day, taking notes as I went along. (I also read some NOES comic books.) The 8 pages of notes I took - Freddy's quest for power is still the catalyst for the plot. He wants the Necronomicon so he can become more powerful than ever. It was last seen in the Voorhees house. Is it still there, or the CLPD evidence room? Ash is drawn to Crystal Lake because he's the "Chosen One" when it comes to the Necronomicon. He doesn't know what drew him there until he's already in the middle of a Freddy and Jason sandwich. NOES Comics- "Too many years I'm trapped in this nightmare, just like my victims" "BUT WHAT USE IS POWER IF IT HAS LIMITS?" "More than this" Room of dreamers? Freddy encountering the children? Rotting kid flood? Keep in mind that you're not writing for Bruce Campbell circa Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness, but for the middle aged guy he is now. Make Ash like Rooster Cogburn? Grumpy and reluctant... Maybe Crazy Ralph-ish, too. Big Dave on Crystal Lake radio Work in Ash's drunkeness and "to Hell and back again... and again... and... again..." bit from Fistful of Boomstick. He needs an explanation scene. "My story's scarier" battle between Ash and new Ralph? "Hardware" Write it with a great visual style in mind. We're dealing with Ronny Yu meets Sam Raimi here. Axe-shotgun-shovel 3-way shovel fight FOB style? "It's a trick. Get an axe" variation with Jason. "Groovy" ED commentary lines - "Yeah, because I..." "I guess everything's OK now." "He's toast" Paco/Sparky "Hey, asshole" "Maggothead" "Mama's boy" I'd like to focus a lot of the script on F13 style kids staying in an ED style cabin. The NOES style got it's day with FvsJ, this one should be more F13-esque, with a dash of ED. Use the "Freddy enters reality through a kid in a coma, mixing Dreams and Reality" idea I've had forever? Or maybe that's what happens once he gets the Necronomicon and the coma is unnecessary. Figure this out. If Freddy does this, how could they figure out how to reverse it? Ash isn't smart enough, unless it's a simple destruction job. Yet he's already destroyed the book in ED1. Address or ignore this fact? ED doesn't care much for continuity anyway... The Necronomicon will not be tied into Jason's backstory in any way. Freddy's is more likely, since the Dream Demons have apparently been giving out the nightmare job forever, but no. Probably not. "Are we dreaming or are we awake?" (asleep or --?) (Is this a dream or --?) "I don't think there's a difference anymore." Set not too long after FvsJ. Crystal Lake is not yet aware, or convinced, that Jason is back. The resort site explosion is seen as sabatoge. Like those fires and the "bad water" during the attempts to re-open the camp. Ash will have a big role, but the teens should be prevalent for the mainstream (teen) audience. (And the Ash naysayers.) Living branches must be employed. Ash must revisit the cabin and should encounter Deadites. The cabin in a nightmare. (Fall through cellar door, down stairs in Freddy's boiler room.) Deadites - nightmare or resurrected Freddy/Jason victims? Both in reality mix? Jason getting to slice up some Deadites would be great. Ash enters cabin, exterior turns into 1428 Elm. Build up to Ash's first chainsaw moment, then reveal that it's a small one. Later, when the nightmare mix begins, "I'm gonna need a bigger chainsaw." ¿? Cameos for Ted Raimi and Scott Spiegel. Bob Shaye. Lin? Use Linda's chant: "We're gonna get you, we're gonna get you. Not another peep, time to go to sleep." Blood flood with Ash necessary, as reference to both the ED series and Johnny Depp's death in NOES1. Scene idea- Person in bed in dark room thinks someone (audience thinks Jason) has entered the room. But it's a dream. Freddy reaches up from under bed and pulls person under. Give Freddy the line "I'll swallow your soul!" Killing Freddy with an ED1 style meltdown (with the maggots of FvsJ) would be awesome. He's melted before, he can melt again. Have Freddy possess someone? Possess Ash? Use the body to invade police station? Should there even be a police station attack? Ash interacting with mirror seems to be a prerequisite. The Delta 88 is. (It's breakdown brings Ash and teens together?) Prosthetic hand. Divide into 3 atmosphere sections? F13 style becomes NOES, becomes ED? Or whatever... Have Freddy do the opening narattion introducing the Necronomicon, a'la the openings of ED2, AOD and FvsJ. Have heroine overhear Ash talking about the Book and associate it with her nightmares, and that's what brings them together? Maybe teens should be CL residents instead of vacationers... ?!? Freddy-ized Rotten Apple Head? Similar to NOES3's Freddy snake. Jason wearing Freddy's glove for a kill? Give Jason more creative kills and varied weapons for those that complained about "too much machete" in FvsJ. Teens - 8 of them. ED group - wimp good guy, jerk, wimp's girl, jerk's bitchy girl, supernaturally sensitive girl. The Final Chapter group - good girl, good guy, girl "with a reputation", girl's jock boyfriend, slut, prude, loser, funny jerk. FJA group - jerk, supernaturally sensitive good girl, ss's good boyfriend, jerk's "reputation" girl, token stoner, jock, jock's girl, jg's sister. Names - SAM (stoner), TRINA (jg), SIERRA (jgs), OWEN (jock), LIZZY (lg), EVAN (jerk), TIM (ssgb) and AMY (ssgg). Dig further into Jason's psyche (and childhood?) through dream sequence. How to get him unconscious? Do it in Nightmare Reality stretch? Flashes of Mother. "I thought I destroyed that book once before" "Yeah, you did a hell of a job, dude" Have Jason or Ash drug around room like Tina/Julie? Opening kills a Jason-thwarted attempt at getting the Book from the Voorhees house? If the police then take the Book as evidence, they know murders are starting up again... Unless they're in denial. Call it a ritualistic murder/suicide... OR the discovery comes later. NOES2 NightmaReality - Intense heat. Flame. Doors/windows shut, lock. No pain. Disappearance. Human faced dogs. ImaginAnts. Monster animals. Fake catwalk hole. Love = fiery meltdown. NOES1 - Tongue phone while Nancy is awake but Glen is asleep. NOES3 - Writing on Joey that I assume no one other than Nancy sees, but she was awake. Maybe stretch the events out over more time. Have a little down time between police station attack and NightmaReality. Like the PD attack = FvsJ's rave. But the majority happening in 1 day does fit F13 and ED... NightmaReality in midtown CL or in woods? End with Jason in fiery coma? Ash repeats his "something in the woods, something that's come back from the dead" speech from ED2 in reference to Jason? Or Crazy Ralph does? Easy way around NightmaReality going from CLPD to woods - location just changes as they step out the door. Location could change multiple times. Woods, boiler room, 1428, sanitarium, chapel? Roach sight gag in stoner dream? Maybe the stoner shouldn't have a dream after FvsJ. Mirror dream ending for Ash? Someone doesn't like sleeping because it wastes 1/3 of your life? Amy - stabbed in the back with razor claws (Freddy) Plus several Deadites, zombies and other assorted creatures get dismembered Here's the first ending that I wrote for the treatment - Amy has reached the floor at the same time and is picking up the Necronomicon. She sees the pit and starts to go for it, to throw the Necronomicon into the fire... Freddy stops her, stepping up behind her and slamming his claws into her back, lifting her up on them. "Book burning bitch." Freddy takes the book from Amy's hand and tosses her body aside. Suddenly there's the loud bang of a shotgun being fired and the shot blows the book out of Freddy's hand. A large hole explodes in Freddy's back as well and the boiler room shakes, pipes bursting. The book lands near the pit. Freddy turns to find Ash standing nearby. Beaten, bloody, holding the smoking shotgun. Freddy's been hurt by the shot to the book, but he remains defiant. "You think you can stop me? I'll swallow your soul! There's plenty of room..." Freddy tears his shirt open to reveal the faces of Brandy, Sam, Evan and Michelle on his chest and stomach. Trapped souls. As we watch, Amy's face emerges among the others. Ash remains defiant as well. "I've been through Hell. I've fought all kinds of demons and monsters. They've all wanted to swallow my soul. My answer's still the same -", Ash points his shotgun into Freddy's face. "Swallow this." Ash fires, blowing Freddy's face apart. Freddy flies backwards, landing beside the Necronomicon at the edge of the pit. Freddy's face reforms, taking on his regular look. Freddy grabs the book - Then Jason lunges up out of the pit and grabs him. Jason and Freddy slide back along the edge of the pit. Freddy slashes Jason's arms and hands repeatedly, trying to get him to let go, but it's no use. Freddy, Jason and the Necronomicon fall down the pit and into the fire below. Jason sinks into the fire. Freddy and the Necronomicon scream as they burn. The book is consumed in flames. A blast of fire explodes up out of the pit and fills the boiler room... Ash wakes with a start, laying on the floor of the Crystal Lake cabin. He looks around to see that the place looks fine. No sign of where Rotten Apple Head Freddy burst through the back, but also no sign of Amy, Michelle or Evan. Ash climbs to his feet, taking the chainsaw off his right wrist, and heads for the front door. He opens the door to find that it's day. He cautiously steps out on the porch, then starts to walk away from the cabin. Out in the woods, Jason is slumped against a tree in the spot where he was when he was attacked by the living vines. His clothes are charred, his mask slightly melted, and smoke is rising up off of him. We push in on his mask and once we're close, a music sting accompanies the opening of his eyes. CUT TO BLACK.
