Falun Dafa was introduced to the public by its founder, Mr. Li Hongzhi, in 1992. By 1999, it had spread by word-of-mouth and the number of practitioners reached around 100 million.
As most of you who have been following international news probably know, China is still a Communist state. This means that the government stays in power because it wants to, not because its citizens want it to.
The size of the Communist Party and its supporters reaches only around 70 million. When you have a faith that has close to 100 million followers (despite the fact that this faith is peaceful and is not involved in politics in any way), any government that holds on to power by illegal means is bound to get nervous.
So, the Chinese government got nervous. They started disturbing and harassing Falun Dafa practitioners. In order to voice their concerns, Falun Dafa practitioners used all means to peacefully appeal to various authorities. When all this did not work, there was a peaceful protest in front of Tiananmen Square by 10000 practitioners, who even cleaned up their own litter!
The Chinese government thought that these peaceful protesters - who were just asking for their rights and even bothered to clean up their own litter - were a threat to the community. Within a short while, Falun Dafa was banned.
The worst was just beginning. From July 19th, 1999, millions of people were arrested in a crackdown that no sane or fair government would have authorized. As Falun Dafa practitioners appealed peacefully, the authorities became even more brutal, torturing and killing people, and framing their deaths as suicide.
Till date, over 380 good people have died in police custody, according to sources. Every day, there are many more who are tortured and killed. In fact, the Chinese government seems to be spending more time and money fighting the Falun Dafa movement, which is peaceful, than worrying about criminals or corruption.
Guess that makes sense, when the most evil and corrupt criminals are sitting the government chairs...
