Gods and Goddesses
30 points
Deities can be complex creatures. Never in a million years could we as humans even begin to understand our God and all the facets of his being. The same can be said for the gods and goddesses of ancient times. In a way, they can be even more puzzling than our Christian God. While we can always rely on our Father to be perfect, omnipotent, and benevolent, the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses could often be unreliable, spiteful, and downright moody! The reason for this is because many times these deities will oddly resemble - you guessed it - humans!

Objectives:
* to learn about the complexities and characteristics of the gods and goddesses
* to do a focused research using reliable texts and internet sources
* to utilize power point as an effective teaching and learning tool, as well as an aid for presentation

Directions:

1. You willl first be assigned one of the following deities on whom you will focus your presentation.
   Zeus              Ares               Artemis            The Muses
   Poseidon       Athena           Hephaestus
   Hades           Apollo             Demeter
   Hestia           Aphrodite        Dionysus
   Hera             Hermes           Eros
Research your deity using Edith Hamilton's
Mythology, as well as the mythology web sites listed at the bottom of this page.

2. You will create a power point presentation in order to teach the class about your deity. This presentation should be no longer than five minutes, but should include vital information such as:
   * the Greek AND Roman name of your deity
   * what your deity is the god or goddess of
   * your deity's symbol
   * your deity's personality and temperment
   * your deity's family history (where did he/she come from?
does he/she have children, a spouse, brothers, sisters?)
   * who his/her main worshipers are, as well as whom he/she
     favors
   * your diety's special city, plant, and animal
Your power point should:
   * contain text that is grammatically correct and free of
     spelling errors
   * contain pictures of your deity, his/her animal, plant, etc.
   * be visually stimulating and contain text that is easy to
read from the back of a classroom (make this a work of art!)
*begin with a title slide that states both your deity's name and
    your own

3. You need to save your power point in THREE places:
   * On your hard drive or flash drive
   * In the Villa Lab User under my name
   * In the Homework drive in the Honors World Lit folder under
       my name

On the presentation day, each student will present her deity to the class.
Please come dressed as your deity in some way shape or form. In addition, you must bring an offering to Elvis, our "King of Judgment" in hopes of a good grade!!!

Due Date: Wednesday, September 8 (Friday, September 10 for Demeter and Dionysus)
