We have discussed the fact that The Glass Menagerie is a memory play, which explains why there is a dynamic between reality and illusion. In recalling personal memories, we noted the characteristics of memories: how various aspects hold different emphasis, how some things may be distorted, how our five senses play into our recollections, how one memory may lead to another, and how our thought processes may be interrupted by outside stimuli.

 

Your assignment is to focus on one particular memory from your life and write a short memory play in the tradition of Tennessee Williams. Keep in mind the aspects that make The Glass Menagerie a memory play and incorporate them into the construction of your drama.

Since you are taking on the role of a dramatist, this play does not have to be 100% historically accurate…in fact, most memories are not. Take a bit of creative license to add interest to your piece, but be sure not to compromise the core integrity of the memory.
