INTRODUCTION TO PENICILLIN

PENICILLIN IS an antibiotic formed by some forms of Penicilllum, specifically the mold variety which are ascomycetes.

THE HEALING POWER OF PENICLLIN
has been harvested by pharmaceutical companies who grow these molds in large liquid cultures and then extract the life saving anibiotics.

PENICILLIN HAS MANY USES:

   i)  It can kill bacteria by restricting its growth
ii) It is effective against a wide range of bacteria such as
pneumococci streptococci, meningococci, and gonococci are just a few.
iii) Helps to stop the spread disease and therefore improves the number of post surgical infections.

ABUSE OF THE ANTIBIOTIC
has caused the emergence of resistant strains of bacteria that are not affected by the drug due to the transfer of genentic code from one strain to another (plasmids).  This is a dangerous concept as now the antibiotic that has affected the most people is now threatening to become obsolete.

THE SIDE EFFECTS of penicillin are relatively rare but can be serious.  Rashes, fever and anaphylactic shock (fatal) can result to those allergic to the antibody.

IN ANY CASE penicillin has been deemed one of the greatest medical discoveries of the millenium by Encarta Encylopedia and has lived up to the praise it has received.
