Well, if you’re an
Indian possessing a TV set with cable connection, that should be a very
familiar dialogue. Yes, it’s the typical conversation between the host
of India’s number one game show ”Kaun Banega Crorepati”, Amitabh
Bachchan and yet another hopeful candidate playing for a crore of
rupees(10 million rupees). Its on the air, four days a week from Monday to
Thursday and has taken STAR
TV’s TRP (television rating points) for a wild spin.
So what is special
about this show? For one thing it is hosted by one of India’s most
beloved superstar actor Amitabh Bachchan. For another, its been created by
India’s quiz show maestro’s Siddarth Basu. The design has been
inspired by the vastly famous Who
wants to be a millionaire, a time tested success in over 30
countries. And then of course, it has been instrumental in moving the
Indian soapbox from movie-based entertainment into infotainment
stimulating parents (perhaps for the first time in Indian TV history) to
encourage TV watching by the junior. Most importantly, it ignites a sense
of self worth in the viewer, when he finds himself capable of answering a
question posed on the show. The show had its first crorepati last
week, who instantly became a household name increasing expectations all
around. There’s really no doubt about it, this is the most happening
show in India today.
Well,
it is never lonely at the top – or at least so is the belief among the
numerous TV channels competing for higher TRP’s in India. A spate of KBC
clones (both at the national and regional level) are expected to be in
the pipeline and one – Sawal
Dus Krore Ka hosted by veteran actor “Anupam Kher” is
already on air. While the prize money is bigger, the show hasn’t quite
generated the passion that KBC does. But then, it doesn’t have the first
mover advantage, nor Amitabh Bachchan…. However, its still early days to
write it off as an also ran, for its backed by Zee TV, the Indian
entertainment tycoon Subash Chandra’s brainchild.
Meanwhile, STAR
TV is on the rampage. It knows it has a good thing going and is
doing all it can to consolidate its leadership position. It has
created a website
exclusively for the program. And there are plans to enhance participation
by including NRI’s in UK, USA and Dubai according to a news item on timesofindia.com,
a leading Indian portal. The news item also indicates that plans may be
afoot to introduce two other very popular international gameshows Survivorand
Big Brother to the Indian audience. Believe it or not, there’s
also an online KBC
fanclub who claim to have a database of questions amongst other
things.
The success of KBC
is likely to have substantial spin-offs in co-branding too and we may soon
find merchandise with the KBC logo on the streets. The admen are also
using the show to their advantage and at last count there were at least
three ads with the KBC theme. And when things become this hot, trust MTV
to come out with a trademark spoof “Kaun Banega Kangal” hosted by
arguably India’s top VJ, Cyrus. And they have got
a “peepshow” on KBC as well. Now isn’t that worth checking
out?
