My 180g All-Glass Dual overflow tank

well after spending so much money on my first tank and the purchase of this new one I decided to save some money and first of all make my own overflow pipes from a GREAT link I found on Aquaria Central, and secondly make my own 30 gallon sump

Making of the sump, when finished it will have Dual filter media trays (one for each overflow), as well as a second filter media placed just above the water line to eliminate the splashing sound.  There will also be baffles which eliminate ANY bubbles from returning back to the tank.

finished sump in action

finished sump in action,  one baffle is slid in parallel to the filter tray all the way to the bottom of the sump, the first baffle has holes drilled along the length of it and about 3/4 of an inch from the top. why you ask?, simple, the splashing water creates bubbles, the holes in the baffle since they are below the water level, let the water flow through, and since bubbles rise to the surface of water, they would stay behind the baffle.  The second baffle serves to calm the water and letting it flow gently to the return pump, again to minimize bubbles and avoid stirring up any debris.

Mvc-299f.jpg (48475 bytes)above is some Live Rock around the frame I built out of 1/2" pvc which will support the refugium near the surface of the tank, as well as provide shade for the mushrooms, and less light intensive corals I will have
Mvc-304f.jpg (62113 bytes)Two days later, a few more pieces of Live Rock added, the tank has also cleared up almost completely, and my sloped reef with lagoon type refugium is beginning to take form.  Unfortunately my LFS ran out of LR, so I will have to wait a week to get more.
More rock added today 4/23/00, sloped plateau starting to take shape.  Water also cleared up nicely after installing Magnum.
