Animals are all around us, so it is easy to think that we know exactly what animals are. But the animal kingdom is amizingly varied. Some animals have fur or feathers; others have shells or scales; many have no hard body parts at all. Animals often have eyes, ears and legs, but there are many creatures that survive perfectly well without them. Many small animals spend most of their lives fastened to one place, and some microscopic ones can even survive being dried out or frozen solid.

During earths long history, evolution has produced many new types of animals. At the same time, many species have become extinct. In nature, extinction is a rare event, but in recent times, it has become much more common. Some of the worlds largest and most impressive animals, such as the tiger, the black rhinoceros, and the giant panda, are now so rare that they are endangered. In just 10 or 20 years' time, they may survive only in zoos. Many other animlas will be seriously at risk if their numbers continue to fall.

Animals are in danger for many reasons, most of which are caused by humans. People collect animals as pets and hunt them for food and sport. People take over and destroy animals' habitats, leaving them with nowhere to live. Our planet is home to a vast and varied collection of animals. They live everywhere, from the tops of mountains to the depths of the sea, and they have all developed their own methods of survival. We must protect the animals we have left, before it is too late.
