Purple Smoke

"The little elfen girl sat on the edge of the path, rubbing her aching feet, for she had been on a long journey to reach the village of Delterford.

Pulling her leather shoes back on, she got up and made her way to the tall village gates.
When she reached the gates, she found that there was not a guard, so she opened them and went in.
However, the village was deserted and the doors of the houses were left wide open. The people must have left in a rush.
A few streets away, Jade could see a cloud of purple smoke rising above the houses.
Filled with curiosity, she decided to go and see where it was coming from..."

"...She ran down the emptied roads, closer to the smoke, which seemed to be fading. As she neared the place where she first she began to run, afraid it would dissapear before she could find out what it was.

She turned a corner, and suddenly the smoke was all around her. It filled her lungs, her eyes began to blur and her head felt dizzy. She staggered back, and fell. "I have to..get away.." she thought as her senses became more and more unclear. Unable to get back on her feet, she strained to crawl back out of the smoke. She could barely feel the ground beneath her hands an knees.

Then, just as she felt sure she was going to loose consciousness, her senses began to come back to her. She could feel the ground beneath her again, and her eyesight began to clear.

Ahead of her she could see the purple smoke. Several houses down it was still billowing high, but directly in front of her it she could see it slowly receeding. Now she knew why it had taken her by surprise. Near her it was low to the ground--she wouldn't have been able to see it from above the houses so close. It seemed to be coming out of the ground...she strained her eyes some more to see. It seemed...it seemed that the ground was moving! There were...holes...es, holes, hundreds of them, in the ground, with purple smoke billowing out of them. And they were moving...closing up, slowly, but noticably..."

"...Jade crept slowly towards one of the larger holes from which smoke was billowing out of. She tried to peek over the edge and down into the hole but the smoke was to thick, it stung her eyes and filled her lungs. She started coughing and sat back away from the hole. But her movments were to quick and the gound around these mysterious holes was delicate. Before she could scramble back, or even catch her breath to screem Jade found herself falling..."
