Llandudno is one of the largest and most popular of the Welsh seaside resorts, and still retains much of its Victorian character and charm. The golden sandy beach at North Shore is set in the magnificent crescent shaped bay, flanked by Great Ormes Head and Little Orme, with Llandudno and its elegant promenade lying protected between the headlands.

Llandudno is dominated by the 679 foot high Great Ormes Head, a huge carboniferous limestone hillside at the end of the peninsula, from where much of Llandudno's ancient history stems. Relics have been found on the site from the Beaker People, and Copper was being mined from the Great Orme 4,000 years ago in the Bronze Age. There is evidence that during the Roman occupation, copper was mined from the Great Orme. Indeed mining continued during the Industrial Revolution, due to the great demand for raw materials, until the 1850's when the accessible ore was exhausted. Today you can visit the "Great Orme Copper Mines", take a guided tour (hard hats and miners lamps are provided) and learn about the mines, while experiencing the working conditions of the miners.

Leave the main A55 at Junction 19 sign posted to Llandudno on the A470 until you reach the promenade A546, here you will sea the magnificent Victorian pier, drive along the promenade towards the pier (South parade). You will reach a "T" junction where you turn right (North parade) then drive a short distance and you will arrive at a small roundabout where you take the second exit (turning right)

Follow this road where you will pass the "Grand Hotel" on your right hand side and then the pier, continue until you reach a toll gate (Happy Valley Road), there is a daily charge of £2.50 per car. Follow this road (Marine drive) driving around the Orme with the sea to your right hand side, continue for approximately 1/2 mile where you will reach a small junction with the summit turning at your left hand side, do not turn left here merely continue along Marine Drive where you will shortly pass the Lighthouse B&B on your right hand side.

"Lighthouse B&B"

Lighthouse B&B

Continuing past the Lighthouse B&B you will notice the aptly named "Rest and Be Thankful" cafe and if those flags are in the direction shown.................."Surfs up dude!"

Continue past the cafe for approximately 500 yards where you will notice a concrete road turning sharply and rising to your left hand side, follow this road right to the end where there are two car parks. Looking straight ahead you will see the remains of a concrete gun inplacement. Just to the left of this base is the main South West flying slope. If the wind is from the North West simply walk to the right of the main slope.
