Elysium, Armagh, The Clare Valley, South Australia

Our patch of land. Looking after it is a lot of work, but picking our own fruit and nuts, and getting a good press of olive oil helps to make it all worthwhile. There are many photo oportunities too.

Sheep on Big Hill Sheep on Big Hill Sheep on Big Hill 1

Sheep on Big Hill 2

Uncharacteristically the sheep were being cooperative, they stood in a useful position while I took this photo.

Both originals are 35mm negatives. Scanned at 3360 x 2240, 7MP.

Sunrise over Clare Sunrise over Clare

Brilliant sunrises are not unusual at Elysium. The difficulty is getting the right foreground to go with the clouds.

Sheep on a misty morning Bluegum trees and sheep

A detail from the photo on the left

In early spring the grass is very green, but has not yet grown away very much.

Canon S2 1S digital camera, 5MP.

Misty trees Misty trees

My dog and I walked up the larger of the two hills on Elysium early on a winter morning (2001/07/26) when there was fog covering the land, but clear skies not far above. In this photo the tree made large by perspective in the foreground is balanced well by the more distant tree on the right.

Canon FT, negative scanned at 7MP

Big Hill Mist 3 Old bluegum near sunrise

Looking toward the hamlet of Armagh from our 'big hill'. There are sheep again in the middle distance.

It is probably obvious that the early morning is my favourite time of day for photography.

Canon EOS 300v 35mm SLR, negative scanned at 7MP.

Backlit Sheep 1 Backlit Sheep 2 Backlit sheep 1

Backlit sheep 2

The backlighting, the curves of the contour banks, the rolling ridges, and the silhouetted trees make an interesting composition.

Both taken using a Canon EOS 300v 35mm SLR, negatives scanned at 7MP

Backlit Sheep Backlit sheep 3

No land to be seen here, only the sheep in near silhouette. The photo would be nothing without the cloud or the gum tree branch. Does it work? I leave it to you to say.

Canon PowerShot 5MP digital. Taken several years after the two photos above.

Sunset on Tank Hill Sunset on Tank Hill

A sunset to finish the page with.

In this case the sun had set behind me; the pink clouds were covering the whole of the sky. There are many more spectacular sunsets, I like the subtlety of this one.

Canon PowerShot 5MP digital
