Bernie Federko Statue Being Commissioned
For Unveiling In Savvis Center
 

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 9, 2002 - St. Louis Blues team owners Bill and Nancy Laurie tonight presented new Hockey Hall of Fame member Bernie Federko with a statuette of his likeness as a Blues player, with a life size version to come for display in Savvis Center late this season.

The presentation was made during an on-ice ceremony prior to the Blues' home game vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs. Federko was present with his wife, Bernadette, and sons Dustin and Drew. Another son, Jordan, was away at college and unable to attend.

With the Lauries, his family and current Blues players joining him at center ice, Federko was honored in the wake of his induction on Monday as the first true career Blues player to be welcomed into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The ceremony was televised live in St. Louis as well as to a national Canadian audience on Hockey Night in Canada.

The 6-foot, life-size bronze version of the statue will be unveiled late in the season inside Savvis Center, in a locale to be determined. The statue depicts Federko, the Blues' career leading scorer, in action as he appeared in the early-to-mid 1980s.

The statue is being designed and sculpted by Harry Weber, who was born in St. Louis and educated at Princeton University. His unique and distinctive sculptures embody action and drama, never appearing static or posed. Weber's sculptures have been featured at the Museum of Fine Arts in Newport, R.I., and are in the permanent collections of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

In 2000, Weber was commissioned to produce the official sculptures for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Weber's bronze sculptures can also be found in private collections in the United States and abroad. His body of work includes over 40 large and 60 smaller pieces, and he has won several major awards at National juried competitions.

Locally, sports fans are familiar with Weber's collection of bronze statues that surround Busch Stadium, with his bust of Jack Buck serving as Buck's memorial last June.

Federko, 46, who now serves as the analyst for Blues games televised on Fox Sports Net and KPLR WB 11, played 1,000 games in the NHL, collected 1,130 points and was the first player in NHL history to record at least 50 assists in 10 consecutive seasons. Federko had four 100-point seasons with the Blues and holds a host of Blues career scoring records.
