The Stratford Amateur Swimming Club (Inc.) is affiliated to the New Zealand Swimming Federation.  The club runs all year round with a summer and a winter season.

The annual registration (membership) fee is set at the AGM. For the 2000-2001 season
(1 June - 31 May) the fee is $60.00 per member. Of this $35.00 is paid to the Taranaki Swimming Centre.  The remaining $25.00 is used by the club to fund its activities.

Membership entitles the member to participate in club nights during the summer season, enter and compete in carnivals, be eligible to take part in club training and receive club newsletters.

Parental Assistance

Parent help is vital for the smooth running of the club.  Club nights are a pleasant way to become familiar with competition swimming.  Parent attendance is necessary to ensure we have sufficient officials (timekeepers, starters etc) for the program to run smoothly and not run overtime.  During the season courses are run by the Taranaki Swimming Centre to train officials.

Club Nights

These are held during the summer season from October to March at the Stratford TSB Pool complex.

Club night is Wednesday with warm-up starting at 6.30 pm. Entries close at 6.45pm and competition begins at 7.00pm.  The program runs until about 8.30pm.

Club nights consist of a regular program of events, where the participants swim to their level of ability.  All events are run in accordance to competition rules with official starters and timekeepers etc.  Some fun races are also included.  Club night is a good place to learn the rules of competitive swimming.

To be eligible to enter the club championships at the end of the season a member must have participated at 5 club nights.

Learn to Swim

For our younger members, learn to swim starts by teaching water confidence, and progresses to teach all the skills necessary in swimming.  These are run in the small and middle pools according to ability.

There are 10 lessons per session, with each lesson lasting 30 minutes.  Lessons are held on Monday and Thursday between 6.00pm and 7.30pm. The next session begins 1 February 2001. The cost is $50.00 for the first 10 sessions ane $35.00 for any further 10 sessions.  (These prices include pool entry fee.)

Learn to Swim will continue through the Winter season if enough interest. These lessons are offered to children aged 4 years to adults.

Contact Jackie Herewini for further information.

Training

The swimming  club has qualified instructors who coach 'Stroke Correction' and 'Advanced Technique' in the 25m pool.  These are run on Monday and Thursday  in the summer and Thursday only in the winter, at 6.00pm - 7.30pm.  There is a fee for this training. Summer training resumes after the school summer holidays and continues to 29 March.

Contact Margaret Higgison for further information.

Competition

For those new to club swimming there are different levels of competition:

  • Club nights
  • Carnivals
  • Club championships
  • Regional championships
  • Junior Nationals
  • National Age Groups (Division 1 & Division 2)
Club nights and carnivals do not have qualifying times for entry.  Stratford Swimming Club requires a member to compete at 5 club nights to be eligible for club championship.

Swimming Carnivals

Carnivals are swimming competions held by affiliated clubs and are open to registered members.  Carnivals are an enjoyable event in which swimmers submit their best times (PB's or Personal Best) and race against other swimmers with similar times.  Ribbons are awarded for placings and most clubs offer spot prizes as well.  Achievement can be measured by improving that P.B.

How to enter:

  • Entries must be made through the Carnival Secretary (Rachel Jeffares)
  • Watch the noticeboard, web calendar or newsletter for forthcoming carnivals.
  • Complete an entry form and with the correct payment (cash or cheque), place in an envelope, in the club box in the announcing room. (Cheques should be made out to Stratford Swimming Club)
  • Note that the club closing date for entries differs from the advertising flyer. This is to allow the Carnival Secretary time to collate all entries.
  • After each carnival the Carnival Secretary receives all the results of any Stratford entries.
The Stratford Swimming Club has appointed Mrs Christine Craig as Team Manager. It is the responsibility of the Team Manager to sort out all problems for our swimmers at Carnivals or Championships.  Swimmers or their parents are not to to to the event organisers with problems or queries.
