When you're making your way around the castle grounds, it's easy to see why this castle has never been overtaken (it has, however, been surrendered). It's built on an extinct volcano, and is high above the city. The rocks would seem sufficiently intimidating for keeping any enemy at bay.

In the foreground is a pet cemetery, where the Scot soldiers bury their dogs. The park is below, and Princes Street marks the beginning of "New Town" which extends to the North Sea.

The castle streets wind up & up, disorienting the explorer. The buildings vary in age. St. Margaret's Chapel, built in the 1100's, is still in use today. A christening was being held the day we visited.

Holyrood Palace, most famous for being the home of Mary, Queen of Scots, was where she witnessed the murder of her secretary, David Rizzio. It's still the Queen's residence when visiting Edinburgh. Note that there is a picture of the burned-out abbey on the first page of our website. There are notable Scots buried in the abbey floor, which is mostly gravel now, including kings and queens and members of nobility. There are many, many historical churches, graveyards, pubs, markets, and inns along the Royal Mile, which leads from the castle to the palace.
