Vancouver Int. Airport Information

As Canada's gateway to Asia, Vancouver International Airport has enjoyed rapid growth over the past  3 years.. The signing of the Open Skies air bilateral agreement on February 24, 1995 allowed new  Vancouver-US routes to be established each year over 1995 and 1996. A major factor in the  implementation of the Open Skies Agreement was the construction of the new North Runway 08L/26R  and the International Terminal Building. The conclusion of these two projects is not the end of the recent airport expansion. The construction of a new 14 - story Canadian Pacific hotel, and an 11 gate expansion of the Transborder/US terminal have been recently completed for the summer of 2000. Renovations have been completed at the South Terminal, (home to most of the regional carriers, fishing charters, and floatplanes) with a reconfiguration that may allow it to handle larger charter aircraft in the future. Rumours abound that there are many carriers that would like increase service or introduce new service to Vancouver when the next phase of expansion is completed. These have included Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Hawaiian, Southwest,  US Air and many others. Local plane spotters are anxiously waiting for some announcements. Alaska Airlines has begun to place a major emphasis on YVR, as it continues towards making YVR its second hub. In 1997-98 it introduced service from YVR to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Seattle. Presently, Alaska has 12 departures daily from YVR, and would eventually like to have 35 departures daily, with the terminal expansion completed.
According to the Vancouver International Airport Authority, YVR is the third largest North American gateway to Asia, after Los Angeles and San Francisco, having captured some 13 percent of air traffic from the Pacific Rim. Currently 25 major carriers, 14 regional/local carriers and several major charters serve Vancouver. Over 16 million passengers flowed through the airport in 2000. By the year 2010, about half the airport's projected 19 million annual passengers will be international.
