Up until 1993, Marine Atlantic operated 16 ships, which serviced 8 service routes as follows:
In 1993, the Government of Canada approved a fixed link to Prince Edward Island which became Confederation Bridge, which abolished the Borden, PEI to Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick ferry route.
Under another Federal Government initiative, Marine Atlantic withdrew from the Bay of Fundy service in 1997, and is now operated by Bay Ferries Ltd.
Finally, the Newfoundland and Federal Governments reached a fincial agreement whereby the province assumed responsibility for the Labrador coastal service
Of the 16 ships which operated up until 1993, only 4 still operate under the Marine Atlantic flag, the M.V. Atlantic Freighter, M.V. Caribou, MV.V. Leif Ericson and M.V. Joseph and Clara Smallwood. The only remaining ferry routes left are the year-round constitutional route between North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and the season service from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Argentia, Newfoundland.
