Keys to Successful Stepfathering
by Carl E. Pickhardt, Ph.D.

The author is a psychologist who presents an easily understood, usable approach to establishing a winning relationship as a
stepfather. He stresses the need for "concession, compromise, and creative alternatives" in considering problems that arise. Also emphasized is the importance of setting up a co-parenting team in which the couple work together to find common parenting ground. A clear message of "go slow" is recommended for nearly all the tasks a stepfather faces.

The book gives much attention to communication strategies and techniques for resolving conflict. Suggestions for
stepfamily discussions include expectations, ambivalence, resistance to change, and adjustments. Dr. Pickhardt contends that stepfathers may choose from three degrees of parenting involvement: co-parent, consulting parent, and nonparent. He then discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. He concludes with a chapter that focuses on honoring the contributions of a stepfather.
