Five Points South is officially classified as a Historic District. According to the Birmingham Historical Society, the Five Points South area encompasses the circle at 20th and 11th Avenue, which includes 146 buildings, churches, synagogues and Ramsey High School. The buildings in our area date between 1880 and 1930.

Five Point South combines tradition with modern diversity. The circle at 20th Street and 11th Avenue shares its 19th century buildings with Five Points South icons Charlemagne Records, The Original Pancake House and Magnolia's. They are joined by modern establishments such as The Gap, Joe Muggs Newsstand, Shaffer Eye Center and Starbuck's Coffee. The addition of these new businesses proves that we are ever-growing, expanding and changing with the times while we retain our sense of tradition.

Five Points South neighborhoods are currently going through a time of urban renewal. Sectioned houses are again becoming family dwellings and apartments are transitioning into condos or lofts. Getting to know the people inside the houses is the cornerstone of the Five Points South Neighborhood Association. By meeting your neighbors you will know professionals, students, artists and everything in between. Our neighborhood has many faces and those faces reflect a unique combination of tradition that is now experienced through its cultural and ethnic diversity.
