Beeton Advances

August 25, 2002

Beeton, ON -  Beeton closed their first round series against the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles on Thursday night with a 9 to 8 victory.  Beeton jumped to an early lead on the bugs by scoring eight runs in the first three innings.  The Beetles bounced back with one run but did not ignite until the fifth inning when they scored six runs to pull within one run of the opposition.  The six runs scored by the Beetles resulted in Beeton using three different pitchers in one inning to keep their lead alive.  Beeton was shut out by Beetles pitcher, Sherri Bailey, during the sixth inning to keep the game close.  During the top of the seventh inning, Alliston tied the game up and Beeton was due up in the bottom of the inning.  With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Beeton got a hit and a walk to have runners at first and second. The Beetles defense was drawn in to make sure the runner did not score on a weak base hit.  Tension and excitement was high and Bailey and her crew tried to force extra innings.  Fortunately for Beeton, they cracked a hard base hit resulting in the winning run crossing the plate thus advancing them to the A Series final.  It was a great game and one can only wait for the finals now!  The Beetles move to the B final.

Regular Season Comes To A Close

August 13, 2002

Beeton, ON -  With last scheduled game of the season to be played on August 15th in Beeton versus the Alliston VW Beetles being cancelled, the SSWSA regular season finished.  The Bugs unfortunately could not field a team therefore had to forfeit the game in favour of Beeton.  All standings and team information is posted to the site.

As a result there will be a league meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday August 19 at 7:00 PM at the Alliston Soup & Sandwich to review the season and plan for the playoffs.  At that time, the league banquet information will also be available.

Thanks for another great season and good luck in playoffs!

Castator Squeezes Victory Over Ivy

Beeton, ON -  It was hailed by many as a classic game.  Two top caliber teams going head-to-head on a Thursday night.  There could only be one victorious team tonight and it was Beeton Castator & Sons Fencing with a 14-13 score.

Ivy's Kelly Breedon-Elliott patrolled the field with dynamite plays and laser throws all night long to hold Beeton many times while the hot stick of Vicki Hock pounded out key hits.  On the other side, ace Janet Ross threw peas all night to most of the Ivy hitters.  Leadoff batter Madelyn Rutledge cranked out some hits and reach base safely all night long.

The victory moves Beeton to a 10-1-0 record while Ivy struggles with a 2-8-0 record.  Their 2-8-0 record does not reflect their play this season.  Any team in the league does want to play them in the playoffs which are around the corner.

Diggers Bury Bugs!

Tottenham, ON -  Canada's Wonderland does not have a roller coaster ride as good as tonight's game between the Alliston VW Beetles and Alliston Diggers.  The Diggers started the game with six runs with only one hit making out of the infield.  They just seemed to make it work with hard work and hustle.  But the Bugs did not go down fast.  In the bottom of the first inning, the Beetles answered back with six runs of their own to even the score at six.  After that the Alliston Volkswagen Beetles just did not make anything happen to support their starting pitcher Sherri Bailey.  Bailey pitched a strong game but the Diggers found ways to make runs happen (a good sign entering into playoffs!).  In the fifth inning the Diggers scored another six runs to tally the score at 20-8.  With the game on the line for a mercy in the bottom of the fifth, the Bugs led off the inning with two hits but could not manufacture any runs with a game-ending double-play.  Denice McKibbon of the Diggers reached base all five times while her teammate, Mejan Harjun played a solid third base with dynamite throws and glove.

Castator Fencing Digs Alliston!

July 25, 2002

Alliston, ON -  It was a short yet explosive game as Beeton Castator & Sons Fencing rolled over the Alliston Diggers on July 16th 14-0.  Connie Fraser provided all of the offense for Beeton while ace pitcher Janet Ross shut out the opposition.  Despite the shutout, the Diggers showed some defensive spark with Denise McKibbon snagging fly balls and making sharp throws all night long.  She has been a valuable pick up for the Diggers this season.

The loss drops the Diggers into the basement of the league with a 2-5-0, -37 record.  Meanwhile Beeton secures the regular season championship with a 8-1-0, +44 record.  Beeton will have to wait to see who they play in the playoffs coming up in a few weeks.

Beetles Take Two In A Row From Ivy!

July 23, 2002

Ivy, ON -  The Alliston Volkswagen Beetles displayed the team of two years ago tonight as they took the second game of a home-and-home series with the Ivy Twins.  The Beetles jumped to an early lead with solid hitting off Ivy pitcher Kathy Marleau and maintained the lead for the 9-5 win despite a late game attempted comeback by Ivy.

Alliston hit the ball well and starting pitcher, Kelly Verner, was supported by solid defense from all positions.  Ivy centrefielder, Kelly Breedon-Elliott showed everybody in the park why she is arguably the best outfielder in the game today with two brilliant catches and her rocket arm.

Last week, the two teams battled in Tottenham at Keogh Park and the score was also 9-5 in favour of the Bugs.  Both teams played well in what may be a preview of a playoff series.
