THIS WEEK'S DEVOTIONAL

LORD, ENLIGHTEN MY DARKNESS
Sharon R. Steffler

What a blessing and testimony Psalms 18 is to the goodness and faithfulness of God! No matter what our trials, not matter what the darkness of the past, He is faithful to bring us out and to walk with us through the darkness-not as a mere companion-but taking charge over that darkness. Read verse 9 with me from the King James version, "He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet."

Friend, any darkness we feel is under His feet! This scripture passage (v. 10-12) goes on to talk about how God manipulates the factors/contributors of this darkness to accomplish HIS purposes . . . turning them into instruments of His judgment against evil--until we see that His brightness caused the dark clouds to swirl and dissipate around Him. Furthermore, look how it says He made the darkness His secret place! I think of this like a woman making a place her home--her nest--her secret place from the world. Here we see God going into the darkness and doing a number on it to transform it into His secret place! Glory! Can we surrender our darkness and invite Him to make it His secret place . . . to let Him transform those contributors of darkness until that very thing we thought would destroy us becomes His secret place . . . the place He has come together with us to make His glory evident?!?

10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

Perhaps you have at times felt that God's miraculous power over darkness takes place only in the secret places of heaven--that somehow He is too far removed from your daily struggles. Perhaps even now, you feel as though your very breath will has been snuffed out as a lonely candle that has been extinguished leaving only darkness and despair. Be encouraged, my friend, for our God is not too far away to feel your despair and your lost hope. No matter what the darkness you face, He is there with you now, and He will save you!

28 For Thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
29 For by Thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.
30 As for God, His way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him.
31 For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?
32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
33 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

The Word says that "He will light my candle and enlighten my darkness!" Praise God! Hallelujah! The devil would have you believe that your feelings of discouragement or despair are the facts-the final word in the matter. Call the devil for the liar he is, and then hold onto the promise of God instead. The Word states the facts, and your feelings of darkness must dissapate in the light of God's powerful promise. His promise does not change when you feel your flame has been blown out . . . when the darkness creeps in around you. Glory! That's just when we get to see God do what He does best. When we feel those times of darkness (and as long as we're in this world, we are likely to have such times), we can be encouraged and know that our Lord is coming to the rescue-He promised! He, who has all darkness under His feet will light our candles! He sees each child with the flickering flame . . . He sees each one with only dying embers, and yes, He even sees the ones who have been snuffed out years ago. He will light your candle again! He will enlighten your darkness! He is LORD of whatever darkness we face on any given day! Our circumstances may change, and the devil may try new schemes and tricks, but that truth remains. Whatever darkness the devil tries to sneak in and make us believe in, THAT DARKNESS IS UNDER JESUS' FEET!

And what is the result? In verses 49 and 50 we see the wonderful testimony of King David . . . praising God for His deliverance. I wept when I inserted my name into it . . . to see just how personal our God is-to see that all those years when I was struggling, and fainting, and wondering if I'd ever have joy again, God had a marvelous plan! He had a plan of restoration, and He has brought it to pass.

Paraphrased passages in italics:
49 Therefore will I give thanks unto Thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto Thy name.
50 Great deliverance giveth He to His servant; and sheweth mercy to His anointed, to Sharon, and to her seed for evermore.

My friend, take the liberty of reading that passage aloud, and insert your name into the verse. This is what God desires to give you! You have seed that you know not of. In addition to your children (if you have them), you have life seeds that you have planted around you among friends, family, and those God has brought your way to minister to. They will reap the inheritance also of your deliverance!

What a blessing this scriptural passage is to me! My God didn't forget me in my darkness of the past, and He will never fail me in the darkness I may face in the future. What a glorious hope to know that we can count on His Word to be true and to minister to the needs of our hearts.

"WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?"
2/8/00

I was inspired to read the origin of the WWJD slogan.
Let this inspire you to really apply the mind of Christ to your daily life.

The exciting story behind the WWJD bracelets begins a century ago, when a minister named Charles Sheldon wrote a novel called In His Steps. The settling is an ordinary city called Raymond, and one Sunday morning at First Church, Pastor Henry Maxwell is preaching a sermon about how to follow Christ's example of sacrificial love.

The service is suddenly interrupted when a tramp stands up and walks to the front of the sanctuary. He's been out of work for a year, he says, yet not a single person in Raymond has helped him find another job not even Pastor Maxwell.

Twisting his shabby hat in his hands, the tramp says, "I was wondering if what you call following Jesus is the same thing as what He taught. What do you mean when you sing 'I'll go with Him, with Him, all the way?'

"I get puzzled," the tramp goes on, "when I see so many Christians living in luxury and remembering how my wife died in a tenement. A member of a church was the owner of [that tenement]. It seems that there's an awful lot of trouble in the world that somehow wouldn't exist if all the people who sing such songs went and lived them out. I suppose I don't understand. But what would Jesus do?"

At that point, to the congregation's horror, the tramp collapses and dies.

The following Sunday, the minister makes a stunning proposal: He's looking for volunteers willing to pledge themselves for an entire year to do nothing without first asking the question, "What would Jesus do?" The volunteers must then do exactly that-- No matter what the consequences.

Some 50 people make the pledge, and almost at once, a remarkable series of events begins to take place.

The editor of the local newspaper has been accepting lucrative ads from the local saloons. Would Jesus do this? No, he decides-and cancels the ad.

A young singer gives up a promising career on the stage to sing at tent meetings on Skid Row. A young heiress takes in a homeless woman, to the horror of her fashionable family. A businessman decides that Jesus wants him to make his tenements as warm and comfortable as his own home.

Some of these people pay a high price for their obedience. They loose jobs, fortunes, family, and friends-just as Jesus warned. But they also learn the joy of following faithfully in His footsteps.

A few years ago, a youth leader in Holland, Michigan was so inspired by this classic that she had bracelets made bearing the letters WWJD" and gave them to the kids in her church. The idea caught fire, and today millions of kids wear them.

If your kids are among them, ask them if they know the story behind the bracelets. If they don't, give them a copy of In His Steps. It's a book millions have enjoyed over the century.

Long after they've given up wearing the bracelets, through all the trials and temptations of life, it may inspire your kids to ask that one, quiet question: "What would Jesus do?"

"I'll go with Him, with Him, all the way."
