Super Bowl Sunday a good day to do stuff

By A. K.

If you're not a football fan, Super Bowl Sunday was a good day to do things like shop and see movies.

"Business didn't completely die during the Super Bowl," says Gary Durden, store director of the Raley's on Windmill and Eastern. "There are a lot of people who don't care about football who took advantage of the lull."

Indeed, shopping was, comparatively speaking, a dream. Gone were the usual throngs crowding the aisles at Vegas grocery and retail stores. "The checkers got pretty bored. I even think they sent one home," said Gary, a worker at the Wal-Mart at Cheyenne and Rainbow.

The movies were even better. At the usually crowded Village Square theaters, you could walk right up and buy a ticket without having to contend with westside yups. Theaters were sprinkled with people, a boon for movie buffs who can't stand rubbing shoulders with the popcorn-munching masses.

By late Sunday night, however, Vegas was back to its crowded, noisy self. Too bad we can't have a Super Bowl every Sunday. The movies were even better. At the usually crowded Village Square theaters, you could walk right up and buy a ticket without having to contend with westside yups. Theaters were sprinkled with people, a boon for movie buffs who can't stand rubbing shoulders with the popcorn-munching masses.
