Live Each Day As If It Were Your Last

In the mountains

Greetings!

It is a beautiful day in the mountains.  The perfect place for us to hold a vigil. DH and I awoke and together,  prayed for Nani and C before we welcomed the day.

The words on the last page of this journal held especial meaning and I intend to live them:  live each day as it were your last.

My ideal last day on Earth would be right here in the mountains with DH and my dogkids and I set out to live this day accordingly.

After a scrumptious DH-prepared breakfast of Joe's Special and fresh coffee, I had a long soak in the bathtub in quiet solitude with soft Hawaiian music playing in the background.

Dressed and freshened up, we went for a brisk morning walk with O and Freddy, running into our new neighbor Reg, who with his wife, Beth, had moved to Big Bear from Seattle.

Forsythia Blooms

Summer has arrived.  Spring's forsythia is giving way to blooming lilacs and the air is perfumed with their fragrance. Our front lawn is greening up nicely and green foliage is covering up winter's bare branches.

I stopped to say hello to the spirits of Happy, our independent little Sheltie, and Laki, the sweetest dog in the world, in the garden alcove. Yesterday, upon arriving, I had placed the lei and bouquet of flowers that our godkids had given me for Mother's Day on their grave markers, a deer and her fawn.

Earlier, we had planned to go see Spider-Man, a movie highly recommended by our goddaughter, Alana, last night.  But yesterday's news wiped us out and instead, we spent a quiet night of reading and getting lost in our thoughts.

The early afternoon matinee appealed to us as the perfect antidote to our funk. Not quite ready for lunch after the morning's full-on breakfast, we decided to substitute lunch with a single-scoop ice cream cone apiece before going to the movie.

Oh my heck, as Neleh would have said, if this is my last day on Earth, then it will be Wild Cherry Vanilla in a chocolate-dipped cone!  DH's comfort food was Pistachio Almond in a waffle cone. To Nani and C!

One of my favorite haunts: Big Bear Book & Bean

I browsed the Book and Bean.  Another perfect activity for my last day, but since one hand was fully occupied with an ice-cream cone, I was content to simply browse the book covers and titles.

After the movie,  we strolled through the village, stopping at my other favorite  store, Edelweiss Books.  It just changed ownership, and I was delighted to hear that the new owner has a kind heart. (The previous owner forbade her two employees from sitting, disallowing a stool at the register)  I browsed to my heart's content with both hands, finding a light-hearted book on Baby Boomers to enjoy for the rest of the weekend.

DH had the perfect plan for dinner:  a homecooked spaghetti dinner with some Parducci Merlot.  In case I haven't mentioned it, DH makes the best spaghetti on Earth.  Not even my mother's comes close.

Robins' Nests on Our Front Porch Rafters

Two robin families are nesting under the eaves of our front porch, so instead we dined on the back deck.  The privacy was perfect for our cocooning mode, and after I oohed and ahhed myself through that delicious dinner, DH retrieved his `ukulele and I danced the hula to his renditions of White Sandy Beach, Lovely Hula Hands, and other hapa haole tunes.

Our audience included the tall pine trees in our little woods, the squirrels, and O and Freddy.

If today is my last day on Earth, it was well spent.
