         SPM Bio
Ask Texas rap sensation SPM (a.k.a. South Park Mexican) what he wants most out of life and hell tell you straight up: beat the streets and rock the world with his dope - a term he uses to refer to his music.

SPM (nee Carlos Coy) was born and reared in Houston, Texas. When he was in the sixth grade he and his family moved to a predominantly African-American neighborhood called Hillwood. Located in a section of the city known as South Park, Hillwood is also the home of SPMs former classmate, rapper Brad Scarface Jordan.

I first moved to South Park when I was in the sixth grade, and I was the only Mexican on campus.  The first morning I went to school, some kids challenged me on the break-dancing thing in the middle of the cafeteria. I did some moves that they hadnt seen before and the whole cafeteria went berserk. The whole school loved me after that. It helped me break the ice at South Park.

Popular in school, SPMs reputation grew in the streets as well.  Explaining how he first got the name SPM, Carlos says, I was the only Mexican in South Park, so after a while people started calling me the South Park Mexican and the name just stuck it was all love.

Eventually, SPM went on to earn his GED and some college credits thanks to a special program for people whose families were migrant workers, but even that wasn?t enough to keep Carlos off the streets. It would take an event that would almost cost him his life to place him on a more positive path.

I was a twenty-five year old washed-up dope dealer. Luckily, I walked away from my last dope deal with my life, but I still had  to face people I owed money to. So I sold everything that I ever owned just to get the money.  My brother had been saving some money, and he loaned me a few thousand just so I could finish paying these people off.

He was broke but determined not to go back into the drug game. I got down on my knees and prayed to God. I said God, Im at rock bottom. I need your help. I know Im a pretty smart dude. Just let me know what I can do to come up the right way because theres no way I can beat the street. After he finished his prayer, he turned on the television, saw a commercial advertising a local rap competition, and took that as a sign to pursue his first passion: rhyming.

After honing his rhyming skills and securing some beats, Carlos formed Dope House Records with his brother Arthur Coy Jr., and released his first record entitled Hillwood in 1995. It sold 40,000 copies with absolutely no radio play. His next album, Hustle Town, released in 1997, sold 150,000 copies solely by word-of-mouth. The next year, Dopehouse continued to grow with the release of a compilation entitled Power Moves, which sold over 200,000 units.  In 1999, Carlos released another solo album, 3rd Wish, which sold 250,000 units, again with no radio airplay or major label support.  The album captured national attention when it made Billboard?s Heatseekers chart.

In the Summer of 2000, Dope House Records inked a distribution deal with Universal Records and jointly released the Dope House compilation, The Purity Album, which contains SPMs hit single, You Know My Name.  Later this Winter, South Park Mexican will release his fourth solo effort, Time Is Money.

Produced by N Happy Perez and Carlos, Time Is Money is filled with straight, uncut Texas funk that will be banging out of trucks, clubs and stereos from coast to coast. Some outstanding tracks include the danceable, Short Skirt, Wiggy, Wiggy, a jam that showcases SPMs keen sense of humor, and the totally off the meter jam Oooh Wee.

Carlos lives by the adage, time is money. To me time is money. I dont have time to sit and chill, says the young rapper. I learned it the hard way, and I dont want others to have to go through what I went through.  Time is valuable, dont waste it.
