Designation:

Varauta Battleship**

Note: While Varauta ships have been assigned Terran naval/space type designators, it must be stressed that their size and armaments placed them in a class of their own, matched only by contemporary construction of like designations. As such, their designations must be viewed as indicators of intent and use rather than absolute strength. In addition, the proper translation of the Varauta vessel designations into English was never completely agreed upon. Most of this file is pure speculation based on reconnaissance photos and footage and eyewitness accounts and similar designs.

Names and disposition:

Unknown. Approximately 2 where seen during the Varauta War in 2064 though it is possible many more could exist.

Ship's complement:

• Ships' crew (785 men)
• Mecha pilots (96 men)

Note: The given numbers are approximations; the exact number varied somewhat due to operational realities and different ships.

Dimensions:

Propulsion systems:

• Main power system(1): Unknown at this writing. Thought to be anti-matter powerplant.
• Maneuvering thrusters (38): Unknown type at this writing. Layout appears to be as follows: Six on the bow, ten on each side with six more on the top and five more on the bottom.
• Reaction-mass thrusters (8): Power unknown at this writing.
• Anti-gravity system (1): Propulsive power unknown at this writing.
• Space fold (1): Very advanced hyper space fold drive. Able to conduct ultra high speed folds at extreme range as well as accurate near gravity well folds.
• Planetary capabilities: Unknown as of this writing.

Endurance and mobility limits:

• Max atmospheric speed: Mach 2 or about 2110 kph.
• Max observed space acceleration: 26.2 G
• Range: Unknown.

Weapon systems

• Reflex cannon(1): This weapons form the forward part of the ship. However, the battleships cannon design is much like that of the Robotech Masters using a smaller, non articulated cannon which trades re-fire rate for power. If utilized against starships, the largest vessels could be destroyed with the leakage of the beam. A direct hit would vaporize the target vessel. The weapon could also be set to a wider dispersal. In this setting, it was capable of clearing a wide area of fighters and other mecha, although starships in this area would only be blinded.
• Main beam cannons(2):The battleship's primary weapons are mounted in an 'eye-shaped' lens array on either side of the vessel. The weapons is directly fed by numerous power conduits from the battleship's main reactor, and combined with the focusing lens, adds tremendous firepower to the ship. Each cannon has an omni-directional focusing lens, allowing it to fire in any path within its fire arc (port/starboard)
• Medium beam cannons (8): Eight eye shaped lens of a size slightly smaller than the large lens of the heavy beam cannons line the exterior of the battleship, four to each side. The medium beam cannons have a fire arc of 180 degree's on their respective sides of the vessel, (port/starboard,) enabling them to jointly fire on vessels dead ahead and behind.
• Light beam cannons (12): Twelve light beam cannons complement the heavy & medium beam cannons in the defense of the vessel against other capital ships. Positioned equally to port and starboard the battleship is capable of creating a wall of fire that few attacking ships could withstand.
• Laser Turrets (20): The last line of defense against attacking ships are provided by light beam cannons mounted on the ship's port and starboard sides. While lacking the destructive potential of the forward mounted cannons, the beam cannons can create a sufficient broadside effect to deter smaller warships.
• Heavy anti-warship missile launchers (4): The battleship in addition to its beam cannons sports heavy missile launchers secreted within slide down sections of the lower hull. Each of the missile launchers holds 12 missiles however they can only fire a maximum of 3 at a time per launcher. All four of the launchers can fire at once giving a volley of 12 missiles. The launchers contain long-range nuclear missiles and are usually used only during assaults and heavy combat.
• Light anti-warship missile launchers (8): As a backup to the heavy anti-warship missile launchers the Varauta battleships carry a lighter version of the nuclear missiles for smaller targets and as a backup if the Heavy Launchers are destroyed or run out of missiles. Dorsal mounted the light missile launchers do not need to slide down into a firing position and can be fired much quicker, something they are used for if the battleship is surprised.
• Missile turrets (48): Long ranged missile turrets allows the battlecarrier to engage hostile targets at long and extreme ranges. The turrets are mounted on the bulbous module behind the command tower and are positioned to provide maximum coverage in all directions. Each turret has a 270 degree arc of fire.

Air group and mecha complement:

• 96 Fz-109 Elgerzorene Veritech fighter

Electronics:

• Omnidirectional barrier defense system(1): An advanced forcefield system which covers the full four pi steradians around the ship with a yellow-greenish forcefield (or if desired, only part of the ship). This field will stop all solids and directed energy weapons (except lasers through a narrow band). However, excess energy which cannot be shunted from the field will be stored in the virtual structure of the field itself. The Varauta design seems to have a extremely high capacity, much higher than contemporary Terran designs. However there is a drawback it appears as though no energy weapons may be fired while the shield is up leaving Varauta power systems to be often thought of as rather weak.

Design notes:

With their advanced sensor suites they are capable of detecting future conquests for the Varauta and pacifying them with their weapons and fighter squadrons, these great vessels form the backbone of the Main Varauta Fleet and smaller Varauta Fleets. Some smaller fleets have battleships as their Fleet Flagships, the Fleet Commander directing their forces from the well protected bridge of the Battleship.

History:

Unknown. Sketchy details exist but nothing concrete. Most information has been classified top secret by the RDF and UN Government.
