Designation:
Polo-class Submersible Fusion Attack Submarine (SSF)
Class History:
- 668 Total built by Groton Electric Boat Yards (2048-2070)
- 16 Destroyed 4th Robotech War 2063-2068
- 1 Scrapped
- 651 In Service 2070
Ship's complement:
Note: The given numbers are approximations; the exact number varied
somewhat due to operational realities and different ships.
Dimensions:
Length: |
162 meters |
Height: |
17 meters |
Width: |
15 meters |
Operational mass (typical): |
19,000 metric tons |
Propulsion systems:
- Main power system: 1 Rolls-Royce PWR-12 or nuclear fusion
reactors with a rated power of 277 MW each.
- Propulsion systems (2): Westinghouse CE-5 MHD engines mounted in
side by side in the stern of the ship, with the exhausts surrounded by a
heavy shroud for impact protection and infra-red signature reduction. The
total effective propulsive power is 50,000 SHP.
Endurance and mobility limits:
- The dry stores endurance is 6 months maximum; after that, the Polo-class
need to restock, most commonly from an underway replenishment ship. Potable
water and oxygen can be obtained from the surrounding ocean.
- The effective core life of the fusion reactors is 30 years.
- The maximum speed is 26 knots surfaced and 48 knots submerged. The maximum
diving depth is 2500 meters operationally, and 4000 meters in an emergency.
- The magazine for the ship's torpedo tubes can store 64 large weapons such
as heavyweight torpedoes or cruise missiles. Two mines can be carried
instead of one large weapon. The total capacity (including weapons in the
tubes) is 70 full sized weapons.
A typical loadout (ca. 2055) was 20 SSM-05
Avatar surface to surface missiles, 20 SSM-09
Savior surface to surface missiles, 15 Mk98 Dolphin torpedoes, and 25
Mk92 Shark torpedoes.
Weapon systems:
- Mk82 760mm torpedo tubes (8): Conventional albeit large
torpedo tubes. These can fire a large variety of weapons. Weapons with a
diameter of less than 760mm can be fired by using liners in the tubes. The
torpedo tubes can be discharged from depths up to 1500 meters, though not
all weapons carried can survive the pressure at this depth. The tubes are
mounted in the bow, and fire to the side of the bow sonar
Electronic Systems:
- The sail boasts mast mounted sensors including a WLQ-6(V)II passive ESM
system, BPS-20 surface-search radar and one attack and one search periscope.
- The hull has a BSY-6 integrated sonar array, including a BQG-10 wide
aperture passive bow and flank sonar, a BQS-26 high frequency under-ice/mine
detection sonar (mounted in the forward edge of the sail), a DSUV-48 VDS
sonar, a Piranha active intercept sonar and two towed array sonars, a type
2105 and a type 2100.
- Distributed around the forward hull are wake, oceanic, IR and chemical
sensors.
