MAY 14 ELECTION
Iligan re-elects Cruz, Dy

TandemResidents of Iligan City in the May 14, 2007 elections gave their thumbs up for incumbent Mayor Lawrence Cruz (LDP) and Vice Mayor Henry Dy (UNO) to run city hall anew for another three-year term.  Lawrence Cruz (in photo, at left) was the runaway winner against two other aspirants, namely, former mayor Franklin Quijano (Lakas-CMD) and Alejo Yanez.  Henry Dy (in photo, at right), on his part, beat his rivals Ruderic Marzo (Kampi), Romeo Nabua (Lakas-CMD), and Franco Badelles (LP).

NAMFREL Operation Quick Count's partial tabulations offer a glimpse of how the candidates fared in their respective fields, as of last week. For city mayor: Lawrence Cruz, 65,852; Franklin Quijano, 19,943; and Alejo Yanez, 4,158.  For vice mayor: Henry Dy, 46,366; Ruderic Marzo, 31,871; Romeo Nabua, 6,974; Franco Badelles, 2,900.

The top 10 contenders for city councilor are Providencio Abragan Sr., Orlando Maglinao, Anghay, Zalsos, Areola, Chonilo Ruiz, Moises Dalisay Jr., Alfredo Busico, Voltaire Rovira, and Larrazabal. Meanwhile, Jose "Joe" Booc, who also ran for city councilor, was nowhere near the list of winners.  Canvassing of ballots in the race for the 1st congressional district of Lanao del Norte are still ongoing.  Initial tabulations show Vicente "Varf" Belmonte (GO/UNO) enjoying a fairly comfortable lead against the other two contenders, Imelda "Angging" Dimaporo (Lakas-CMD) and Angelique "Nikki" Badelles (Kampi).  Comelec official and partial result, as of May 23, shows Belmonte with 52,783 votes; Badelles with 39,315 votes; and Dimaporo, 35,150 votes.

Meanwhile, Henry Dy was recipient of the Bronze Tamaraw Medal, the fourth highest award of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP).  He was also recipient of the 100% Attendance Plaque for his perfect attendance in the BSP board meetings. The awards were given on the occasion of the 54th BSP Annual Council Meeting held in Tacloban last May 24. Henry was likewsie reelected as member of the BSP National Executive Board for 2007-2008.

Tindahan Natin

The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce & Industry Inc. recently donated P1.25 million for the setting up of 50 more Tindahan Natin convenience stores that sell essential goods in depressed communities at affordable prices.  The amount in the form of a check was received by Pres. Gloria Arroyo from newly elected FFCCCI president John Tan during the oath-taking of officers of the federation in Malacanang.

It was the federation's gift to the President for her recent birthday celebration.  The new donation to the Tindahan program brings to 175 the number of stores donated by the federation to the government since last year at a total cost of P3.125 million.  At P25,000 per rolling store, the amount was able to finance 125 rolling stores that now provide low-cost basic food and non-food necessities in poor communities in Metro Manila and provinces.

To be nice

It's nice to be important.  But it's more important to be nice.  People remember you for being nice and not for being important.

The selection is an annual project of the Kiwanis Club of Cebu in cooperation with Rhine Marketing, Inc. and the Department of Education. Melissa bested over 200 other top student achievers from different schools in Metro Cebu to land in the top ten list.  The candidates underwent rigid screening, interviews, on-the-spot essay writing, and various tests during the two-week selection process. The awarding ceremonies were held last May 25 at the Cebu Grand Convention Center. Melissa graduated at the top of her high school class at Bethany Christian School, Cebu City.

SysAFTERNOON DELIGHT.  Spotted enjoying an afternoon delight of traditional Chinese delicacies in Cebu City last May 19 were sian-se Glenda "Hong Hong" Sy-Cabilan (Batch '72), in photo at left, and her sisters Lilian Sy (Batch '75), and Caroline Sy (Batch '80), in photo at right. They were sighted enjoying a hearty chow at the new outlet of Red Moon Chinese Cuisine & Delicacies at the elegant Paseo San Ramon, Banawa, Cebu City.  Owned and operated by the owners of Cebu Lumpia House, Red Moon Cuisine is becoming a hit among connoisseurs of old fashioned Chinese delicacies. Among its menu favorites are such mouth-watering dishes as tongkoy-ah (duck soup with tongkoy herbs), ngokong with herb soup, yuchi misua, lomua (eel) soup, owa-chian (oyster omelet), kim koy keh (squash cake), bachang, kiam pong (Chinese paella), fresh lumpia, and various selections of congee. The restaurant has another branch near the Gaisano Country Mall in Banilad, Cebu.

SantiON THE SPOT WITH BOY ABUNDA.  Santi Ong (Batch '70), in photo, was in Manila last May 22 for some business matter.  During his free hours, Santi visited the Big Brother House at the ABS-CBN compound.  While there he somehow strayed into the ABS-CBN studio and found himself becoming part of the studio audience throughout the entire taping of Boy Abunda's popular "Home Boy" TV show. How he was able to sneak into the studio without a gate pass is a case of sheer coincidence and good PR. He befriended the security guard at the studio entrance.  The guard, it turned out, was an Iliganon.  The rest is history.  Meanwhile, Santi's niece Caroline Jean Sy (Batch '98), daughter of Aurora Ong-Sy (Batch '66) has recently left for London.  Caroline, who is an architect, also took up culinary arts not long ago. So now she has flown to London to try her luck with her new culinary skills.

Julius and his family happened to be away at the time.  The fire destroyed the ground floor of his residence, including various appliances, furniture & fixtures. The exact cause of the fire was unknown but investigators suspect it could have been due faulty electrical wiring. Julius and his wife Evelyn own and operate the JE Racines Enterprises, located along the National Highway in Tubod, near Lanao Milling, Iligan City.

The "Don'ts" of Our Time

Remember those times in our young life when our elders would tell us "Don't do this. Don't do that"? Like the obedient kids that we were or supposed to be, we did as we were told. Yes, they were the "don'ts" of our time, the things we used to believe. Check it out. Bring back our days of innocence. Smile. And feel young again.

o Don't sleep when your hair is wet because you'll get blind (mabuta ka).
o Don't cut your nails at night because your mother or father will die (mamatay imong mama or papa).
o Don't sweep the floor at night because it's bad luck (malas).
o Don't read in the dark because it will destroy your eyes (madaut ang imong mata).
o Don't take a bath when you have fever because it will make your fever worse (mosamot imong hilanat).
o Don't take a bath after playing basketball because it will cause muscle spasm (pasmo sa kusog).
o Don't use the electric fan to dry your sweaty back because it will cause pneumonia (ma-pneumonia ka).
o Don't jump after eating guava because it will cause appendicitis (apendikon ka).
o Don't eat too much sweets because it will cause tonsillitis (ma-tonsil ka).
o Don't get caught in the rain because you will catch colds (sip-onon ka).
o Don't go out of the house when you have measles because it will worsen it (mosamot).
o Don't eat different kinds of fruits at one time because it will cause LBM (magkalibanga ka).
o Don't get hurt from a cut on Good Friday because the wound will not heal (dili maayo ang samad).
o Don't go out on Holy Thursday or Good Friday because there's no God, He is dead (kay walay Ginoo, namatay siya).
o Don't eat too much banana or guava because they will cause constipation (makatubol).
o Don't eat too much kamote because it will cause flatulence (mag-utot-otot ka).
o Don't eat too much fish because you'll have worms in your stomach (makabitok).
o Don't hang your underwear in open air at night because the witch will get it (kuhaon sa balbal).
o Don't sleep right away when your stomach is full because you'll have pancreatitis (urongon ka).
o Don't give money to somebody as payment at night because it will cause bad luck (makadimalas).
o Don't urinate in the forest because you might hit some strange spirits (makaigo ka og dili ingon nato). But if ever you have to do so, say "Tabi dili ingon nato" and spit the place where you urinated.

Icon of Singapore
Merlion

The Merlion is the most famous icon of Singapore. The landmark statue derives its name from a portmanteau of mermaid and lion. It stands at the opening of the Singapore River in the heart of the city while a taller replica can be found on Sentosa Island. The symbolic statue recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on an island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore.  Today a trip to Singapore isn't considered complete without a visit to the Merlion landmark.  Photo by Agnes Gail Sy, daughter of Nelson Sy (Batch '62).
