Michigan FAR Flyers
The Michigan FAR FLYERS are two teams of special athletes
with 15 to 20 players each, one Varsity and one Junior Varsity classification.
Representatives of both teams joined the Special Hockey International
Tournament for the first time during the 2002-2003 season. Both coed teams,
they are part of the Variety FAR Conservatory of Therapeutic and Performing
Arts Ice Skating program, which has been encouraging special athletes in ice
hockey and figure skating for over 25 years.
Head Coach Ben Niemiec and Assistant Coaches Frank Taylor
and Todd Kelpin together guide both the Varsity and JV squads. They work
closely with the athletes and are aided by many volunteers to keep both
practice and competitive efforts running smoothly.
The JV squad practice and play their games every Sunday from
September through April at the Birmingham Ice Arena at 6 pm. The Varsity team
practices and plays every Saturday during the same season at the Viking Arena
in Hazel Park at 3:30 pm. The FAR Ice Hockey program, its figure skating
program and all FAR recreational and therapeutic efforts are open to any
individual with a developmental challenge. All levels of skill are accepted and
encouraged.
