Free Homepage Providers
(The following listed providers
are ones I've actually used....in no particular order.)
1. GeoCities
(6MB)
My absolute favorite. Very
easy to use; great for beginners and seasoned webauthors alike. Lots
of features. Good help desk. They have their own page editor
so you don't need to know HTML. You can also easily upload your page
if you choose to create it on your own without the help of the GeoCities
editor. They also give you a free counter and guestbook for your
page as well as a free e-mail account.
2. FortuneCity
(10MB)
Also a good choice for beginners
and experts alike. 10MB is a lot of space! They also have their
own editor so you don't need to know HTML. You can use their template,
or create your own page and upload. The site had been unreliable
in the past, but it has been given a new makeover as well as a tune-up.
However, they are still painfully slow.
3. OneStop
(2MB)
For webauthors with a little more
experience. Extra easy upload for those using Netscape as their editor.
One drawback: there's no file manager where you can manipulate your
files; at least I wasn't able to find one.
4. Angelfire
(200KB)
Easy to use, but not nearly enough
space for avid web authors. However, they offer lots of good features
and have their own extensive clipart library that you can use. Uploading
feature is a little involved, but not too bad. Oh, one thing to note:
they monitor every image you upload.
5. Tripod
(11MB)
Another excellent, very user-friendly
service. Easy one-step uploading if you use Netscape 3.0 or above.
They also have excellent resources. They also offer
free e-mail accounts with your web page account.
6. WBS
(100KB)
An excellent choice for beginners.
Extra friendly to use, especially if you're using Netscape 3.0 or above.
Very easy one-step uploading for Netscape users. They also have their
own easy, fill-in-the-blank page creator for those of you who don't have
the knowledge or time to create your own. But not nearly enough space
for even novice web authors. URL is long and complicated.
7. Freetown
(2MB)
Not my number one choice for one
reason: you must use their fill-in-the-blank editor; they don't allow
you to upload files that you create yourself. Other than that, this
is another very user-friendly service.
8. Xoom
(11MB)
Good service. They offer a huge free graphics gallery for use
on your web page. Lots of web space. You can FTP your web pages
to their server, or you can use their online editor.
9. Crosswinds
(unlimited space)
Yes! FREE UNLIMITED SPACE!!! This is a new Canadian company.
The only drawback is that they are very very new, so the server is very
very slow. They hope to upgrade to a T1 server soon, so hopefully
things will speed up a bit. You choose from various cities around
the world. Very very promising site! They are very friendly
and very helpful. I highly recommend this site for the future!
